Adding any Things from UI fails silently

Through several installations I’ve now been unable to add any Things to my openHAB3 installation(s). No matter what kind of Thing I try to add, pressing “Create Thing” immediately throws me back to the empty Things list without any UI feedback. The logs always look similar, I’ve added an example at the bottom.

I’ve tried a OneWire Bridge, several NIBE simulation heatpumps and an OpenWeatherMap account, all of which fail identically, and I’m running out of ideas what to try next.

Initially I tried this with the FreeBSD port in a TrueNAS 12 VNET jail. When that failed I tried this in a VM running docker on Debian 9.13, following the docker install documentation, but I’m getting the same errors. Switching from 3.1.0 to 3.2.0.M2 didn’t change things either.

I know that there’s long-standing known issues with FreeBSD jails, but I did apply the workaround mentioned for the IPv6 issue to no avail.

As I said, I’m kind of stuck here. :frowning:

Start with a less exotic OS then. No Docker, no jails, Debian 10 or 11 (bullseye).
Use openHABian to ensure it’s not some weird mistake you keep repeating on installation.

PS: increase logging level to debug on org.openhab and org.apache.karaf so it’ll no longer be silent

There is definitely something wrong with your installation. How are you installing these add-ons? The error is basically saying that the add-on doesn’t exist. But if it doesn’t exist you shouldn’t see anything about it in the UI.

The fact that the exact same error is appearing in such different installation approaches does point to something you’ve done differently, perhaps differently with the add-ons.

On a final note, I would not assume that anything written for OH 1.x still applies to OH 3. I’ve not seen anyone mention that they are using OH 3 on FreeBSD at all but I do know that the parts of OH that interact with serial devices has been rewritten at least once, maybe twice since that article was written.

Start with a less exotic OS then. No Docker, no jails, Debian 10 (bullseye).

Will do.

Truth be told, I was hoping somebody might look at it and go “oh yeah, you only have to…” :see_no_evil::smile:

Wishful thinking, I know :slightly_smiling_face: good places to start, the things you suggested. I’ll do that and take it from there, see if I can narrow it down. Ultimately I’d really like to run it on my TrueNAS box, but that can wait. Besides, it’ll be a good exercise for getting my fingers a little more nimble around Linux and VMs again…

I’ll report back!

The official docs recommend using a dedicated system for OH. We always recommend against running on NAS to avoid getting potentially hit by dependencies of various nature.
Consider going for a Raspi woth openHABian then you don’t even have to embark on Linux fiddling.

I was running OH3 betas and milestones in a TrueNAS Jail. Unfortunately it was a while ago and I don’t really remember what I did although it was fairly straight forward following some of the FreeNAS / TrueNAS guides.

So I’ve installed openHABian on a brand new Debian 11 install in a VM. Everything installs fine, as always I go through the initial setup wizard and then try to add a Thing… same problem.

I increased the log level to debug, but I don’t think the output changed on clicking “Create Thing”. I’ve tried attaching the result of setting the root logger to default, but that exceeded the 48k character limit (by a factor of 5)…

I added onewire through the setup wizard, but it’s the same when I delete it and then install it through Settings > Add-ons > Bindings. I’m seeing only the OneWire Binding with the correct version (3.1.0 or 3.2.0.M2, depending on the openHAB version).

I installed openHAB (in the TrueNAS/FreeBSD jail as a pkg, in docker using the documentation’s docker part, now in a brand new Debian 11 install using git as per documentation. Then went through the setup wizard, tried to add a Thing, and then nothing. I don’t know what I’m missing!

I understand that loud and clear. The fact that FreeBSD to this day doesn’t allow encapsulation of IPv4 broadcast packets in IPv6 (breaking Thing Discovery from what I understand), combined with the fact that the (long-time) maintainer of the FreeBSD port has mentioned this specifically in the OH3 port, suggests that this issue still persists though. Anyway, my problems appear to be caused by something else than that, considering docker and debian

I get that idea and I think the reasoning behind it. I have this TrueNAS box though that is a central part of my home IT infrastructure so I’d much rather stick with that if I can than, instead of having odds and ends on completely different infastructure concepts…

I do agree that starting simple to get my feet wet first is a very good idea though.

Didn’t realise there was TrueNAS guides there already, but I haven’t checked in a little while. I’ll have another look, but I don’t think they’ll solve my problem seeing as I seem to be having a rather OS-independent problem with Things rather than initial setup…

Thank you all for the many helpful suggestions so far, I’m really excited and happy about the help in this community!

Sounds strange. Maybe it’s related to your hypervisor settings, do they allow for broadcasts?
Which Java did you use ?

As I suggested to get it working in the first place, start with a Raspi.
When it works you can start exchanging basic components, but only one at a time.

I don’t know, but it’s always been inside TrueNAS as a hypervisor. Could missing broadcasts cause these issues? (I’m not asking will they, just if it’s conceivable!)

Azul as installed by openHABian, don’t know about the FreeBSD pkg though.

I will. Had hoped to get around the Raspberry Pi (only have an RPi1 at hand), but I should be able to get openHABian working in it and see if it makes a difference.

At the same time I’ll dig around in the TrueNAS forums some more - @Sunny said there’s guides and if it’s indeed related to FreeBSD as the hypervisor / jail host, there might well be some insights there.

I’ll report back, thanks again!

Yes, as could other networking or kernel related parameters.

But this is shooting at the dark. The right, systematic approach is to either decode the root log
(maybe you could also try an strace() on the java process …) or to ‘retreat’ to a component combo that is known to work and yes the hypervisor is the first thing I’d remove.

The process you are describing for installation of the add-ons and creation of Things seems reasonable and standard. So I suspect this is something more fundamental. It sounds like you have a few leads. Good luck!

Try this Instructions for openHAB on FreeNAS? - #81 by ngalfas

Yes, my last post on that topic is exactly how to install a jailed OH3 on TrueNAS.
I went smoothly from the start, no problem on auto discovery on my home network.

Well, sometimes it helps to step away from a problem for a while, I guess?

After being caught up in work and family too much to play with OpenHAB for a while I tried again… and it worked. I’m afraid I can’t offer any more detail than that - it just, well, works. I don’t know that I did anything differently…
