I don’t believe there is another way to control the sound - what was added recently, and probably what Bruce is thinking of is the ability use the doorbell - ie detect the button press. This doesn’t allow the sound support though.
I will see if I can find some time to add some basic support for this in the coming few weeks.

I contacted Aeotec and they are willing to validate it once it will work.
How the doorbell can be detect on openhab? directly or through the ZW164?
What does that mean? I already work quite closely with Aeotec, but I don’t understand how they “validate” it?
I think it only works through the ZW164 since the doorbell is not a ZWave device if I remember correctly.
It is a reply of their support team, I guess they want to confirm the device is working well on openhab.
So, I have to wait for your work to be ready. When it is expected to be done?

The Doorbell is Z-Wave but the buttons use a different wireless protocol.
