Alert when action not apply

Hello all

In my setup I have few zwave and mqtt device that depends on signal strength
If I send an action to device like that I wont to know if the action did not apply from ant reason
What is the best method to know the state of the device? should I add to the item autoupdate=false and wait a few second and query the item state?
