I agree with Andreas, there is a huge potential in energy harvesting sensors.
There are today also sensors around which still have a battery but it will last over the life time of the sensor. They are either ultra energy efficient and/or use energy harvesting. I have philips hue outdoor motion sensors (incl temperatur and illuminance measurement) in place for almost 2 years and they still report 100% full battery.
