Hi,
I was looking for someone who is able and willing to build for me a complete home automation system based on openHAB. I was willing to pay for this sevice typical engineering rates for each man hour.
I tried to reach out to potential service providers and ran into two difficulties:
a) it was really hard for me to find someone who is offering such service on the web based on openHAB
b) I received two independent responses (see below) which indicate that professionals are still hesitating to offer solutions based on openHAB because the results of the community are not very well predictable. Unfortunately both statements are in German - sorry for that.
Based on this experience I´d like to suggest two activities:
a) it would be good having a commercially oriented market place somewhere in the openHAB hemisphere where vendors and buyers can meet
b) other OpenSource software like MySQL, Apache, OpenStreetMap and many more can be commerically used without problems and there are loads of companies making money based on these solutions including my own company, so may be it would make sense to initiate some measures towards providing a commercially low-risk openHAB version like for ex. an enterprise version

openHAB ist im HA Bereich durchaus eine mögliche Alternative. Das Ziel/die Motivation der openHAB Entwickler (Urväter) und der stetig wachsenden Open Source Gemeinde ist es, möglichst viel an neuster Softwaretechnologie und Hardwareanbindungen einzubinden. Wir haben die Erfahrung gemacht, dass dieser Umstand für die kommerzielle Nutzung eher ungünstig ist. Wie Sie als Unternehmer wissen, gilt es die Balance zwischen neuster Technik und Einfachheit zu finden. So nach dem Motto, „zu viele Köche verderben den Brei“ hat die grosse Anzahl an mehr/ oder weniger qualifizierten, freien Entwicklern, die Plattform für uns zu unberechenbar gemacht. Als Folge müsste eigener Entwicklungsaufwand betrieben werden. Niemand will/kann kommerziell mit einer unberechenbaren „Black-Box“ am Markt Geld verdienen! Zudem möchten wir nicht möglichst viele Schnittstellen (https://www.openhab.org/technologies.html), sondern möglichst bewährte (z.B. MQTT etc.) nutzen.

Die Funktionsgarantie der Open Source Systeme unterliegt dem Wohlwollen der mitarbeitenden Community und ist daher kosten und garantietechnisch für uns nicht abbildbar. Wir können Ihnen aktuell Systeme von Loxone und Digitalstrom empfehlen.
