I’ve read about HABpanel and Group Displays, and tried multiple searches, but it remains unclear (to me) if I can get openHAB to do what I need.
If I have 12 openHAB-compatible cameras feeding openHAB - will it be possible to have them all display (three rows of 4 each) on a 43" business class monitor (not a ‘smart’ monitor)?
I get that I’ll have to fuss with specific layout settings, etc. (I’d be using Linux.)
(I’ll also want the cameras to trigger notifications - but that looks simple in openHAB.)
I can dedicate a Dell OptiPlex 7060, or buy a top of the line OrangePi, for the project.
I’m asking before I get openHAB all installed, only to discover that a key part of what I want to do is simply impossible. (Note: I’ve looked at Frigate and don’t want to go there.)
openHAB is no surveillance software, it’s meant to be a smart home solution.
So no, it’s (most likely) not possible to get 12 independent video streams in one giant screen at the same time.
Use zomeminder or frigate.
I have zomeminder and put some of the cameras into the openhab pages if they change.
What kind of frame rate do you want from the display? If it’s modest (e.g one per second per stream or slower) you could probably make it work using the IP Camera binding and it’s self hosted jpg stream.
But as the others have said, there are better CCTV software packages about which would work better.
So far all the ones I’ve looked at seem to complicate the simple. I strongly prefer open source. I’ll keep looking. Thanks.
In my experience, that often occurs when one thinks something should be simple but in truth is not. Handling video streams are rarely simple.
I now have multiple feeds showing via separate qutebrowser instances/windows. It’s ugly, atm, but partially functional. It’s an adventure …
