Hi, About a week ago I noticed one of my Philips Hue remotes stopped working. No big deal, it was an empty battery. I replaced the battery and it worked again as expected. One day later, the same issue. I used a battery from the battery drawer so I wasn’t sure about its state. I replaced the battery again but this time I used a new one fresh out of the blister. One day later, the same issue. Ok this might be a broken remote? But then I noticed all my battery powered zigbee devices where running low. I replaced all batteries (new, confirmed with a multimeter and from different packages) but again the next day the battery level dropped by 20% I looked at the “When things don’t appear to be working as expected” section in the documentation and changed loglevels to DEBUG. Unfortunately it became worse. A lot of sensors stopped responding/updating. So as a last attempt I switched the “Reinitialize Controller” switch on. which apparently was a mistake. All sensors were “gone”. I managed to restore most Things by restoring all xml files in /var/lib/openhab/zigbee// Anyway, now I’m back at the point that most sensors and remotes are online but unresponsive. Hi @tsmit ! I have a small Zigbee network, and I’d like to share some of my experiences—they might help with your troubleshooting. 1. - I’ve encountered situations where battery-powered devices drained their batteries in just a few days; the cause was that they were constantly attempting to pair or communicate with the coordinator. So, it could be a pairing issue or a communication failure. 2. - I use Zigbee2MQTT with an Ember-based coordinator (a Sonoff USB dongle). 3. - Zigbee networks can suffer from interference from your own or your neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks. Some channels are more prone to interference than others. Check which channels your Wi-Fi is using. Switching to higher Zigbee channels—like 20 or 25—might help reduce interference, especially if your Wi-Fi is set to channels 6 or 11. 4. - In Zigbee2MQTT, if you change the Zigbee network channel, some battery-powered devices may need to be re-paired. This happens in my own network. 5. - I have more mains-powered devices (like those plugged into outlets) than battery-powered ones, which gives my network better “balance” within the mesh. 6. - The positioning of the Sonoff USB dongle’s antenna makes a difference in my network. Check how it’s positioned, and see if you can move the coordinator closer to the center of your Zigbee device cluster. I hope something on this list proves helpful to you! ---

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions! 1. This seems to be my issue as well. It came out of nowhere ☹ 2. This network uses the “native” Zigbee binding (I’ve updated my first post) 3. Also no changes here. My neighbors are too far away to cause any trouble (I think) I have a couple of Aqara devices and I remember they don’t like other channels than 11? 4. No zigbee2mqtt in this case. But I did click reinitialize zigbee network maybe this broke more than I wanted 5. All my Zigbee devices are battery powered. For this reason I have two repeaters/routers installed (yeas ago). One is an Ikea tradfri and the other is a Sonoff dongle with koens router firmware. 6. Also nothing changed. I have mounted them quite high with a USB extension lead to minimize interference from the PC ---

If you set the reinitialize switch on your controller the only way to get everything back to working correctly is NOT replace the xml file but to actually repair each device again otherwise you will have random intermittent behavior that will drive you crazy. Most likely the first issue was a low battery in a device and that had created a noise(chatter) on your ZigBee network or as also mentioned a new neighbor’s wireless network. Or a powered device that saw a brown out and is in a bad state. I have seen all of the above in the past. start by deleting the devices and trigger repairing(rediscovery) take note the name you used and if you did not change the uid when you first installed, they will discover come back and reattach to the items you had linked before if you did change uid then before you delete you need to copy it and replace it on rediscovery again. TLDR: version delete and repair(rediscover) all zigbee devices. (things). ---

Before deleting everything, I would test one device close to the coordinator to separate a mesh problem from a general binding problem. With only two routers for an all-battery network, a weak mesh is also worth checking, so I would bring one router nearer to the failing devices and let the network settle before judging the result. If you do rediscover devices, do them one at a time and keep a note of each device name, so a device that comes back under a new identity does not silently break your items and rules. ---

Thanks for the replies and suggestions! In the mean time I managed to get the network up and running again by shutting down OH, replacing the xml files again and restarting OH again. This time all sensors came back online and everything is working as before. Next time the network fails I will keep in mind that any device with a low battery can create noise on the network (this might explain the repeating rejoin packages I saw earlier, caused by a brownout of the sensor during the join?) And if replacing batteries doesn’t work I will recreate the network by starting all over. I really didn’t want to do that; as of now I have 1 controller, 2 repeaters and 45 battery operated sensors. I will also take a look at the “backbone” of the network, maybe I need to add more repeaters, any suggestions for a specific brand or model? Or just buy any mains powered device an use that as a repeater? (like zwave)
