Identifying problematic item (out of Memory / Java heap)

try replacing the delimiter from \ to _
and the name is something like: org.openhab.xyz

log4j2.logger.amazon_echo_control_binding.level = DEBUG
log4j2.logger.amazon_echo_control_binding.name = <org.openhab.xyz>

log4j2.logger.zwave_binding.level = DEBUG
log4j2.logger.zwave_binding.name = org.openhab.binding.zwave

alright.
I will delete the lines and set it new from karaf with the “real” jar-file name.
Thank you!

EDIT:
That’s better.
Now I see the DEBUG entries and will wait for the heap space error… :wink:

I don’t see a direct link to amazonechocontrol though…

this does not work:

 Could not parse line 'pid:org.openhab.mqtt'

do you mean:
mosquitto.pid=org.openhab.mqtt

is it the first line in your /etc/openhab2/services/mqtt.cfg ?

it should look like:

pid:org.openhab.mqtt
...

there are just some comments above, but nothing else.
Does this make a dfference?

absolutely :slight_smile:
It has to be the very first line in that file for it to work

no error anymore - thanks

EDIT:
To be more precise: I don’t get the following error an more:

the original problem (heap space related to amazon echo binding or actually synolog surveillance station still persists)

by the way - can I use both?
The option above to dump the OOM and the expanded memory?
like this?

EXTRA_JAVA_OPTS="-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -Xms400m -Xmx650m"

Thanks for all teh tips in this thread.

If it is to any help I also got java heap problems:

Logging won’t help with these out of memory issues. It will always be just another thread that runs into the memory limits. Only heapdumps allow for inspecting what is consuming all the memory.

@NCO did you get it to work?

@mstormi whats the differnce between the above from NCO and yours -Xmx600m, which one to use or both?

So I did start from scratch again with a brand new RPI3b+ and I have only installed mqtt inbuilt , netatmo and GPIO binding, 1 sitemap, 200 items and no rules, and it crashed yesterday due to java heap memory. So why is this an issue? Could it be the Netatmo binding because thats the only binding @NCO and me have in common. Because I dont see any other here on the forum having these issues, and I never heard of anyone with home Assistant having problem with this.

I have changed hardware, fresh install with few items and problem still occurs, so I am unsure what to do next to get rid of the problem, because a crash every week is to often…

Well some 50MB. You can also use a way larger figure here so you get hit later. But use -Xmx just once.
Only proper solution is to find the component that has memory leaks. Try running with the Netatmo binding for some time and observe memory consumption.

thanks @mstormi, so I do :
sudo nano /etc/default/openhab2 and change to this
EXTRA_JAVA_OPTS="-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -Xms400m -Xmx650m"

but how do I observe memory consumption?

sudo java -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -version | findstr HeapSize returns

uintx ErgoHeapSizeLimit                         = 0                                   {product}
uintx HeapSizePerGCThread                       = 67108864                            {product}
uintx InitialHeapSize                          := 16777216                            {product}
uintx LargePageHeapSizeThreshold                = 134217728                           {product}
uintx MaxHeapSize                              := 255852544

Yes.
You can also omit the -XX… and use a larger -Xmx value just keep in mind the RPi only has 1GB so beyond that you’ll run into swapping/paging.

Use top or ps.

Thanks for the feedback @mstormi, I increased it to 900mb and here is the printout:

Will let you guys know when it will crash again… @NCO which version of the netatmo binding are you using?

yes, that’s working properly.

HI guys,

I have a question regarding the /etc/default/openhab2 file where the Java memory options are stored.
I am using also the recommended change here since a long time and set the EXTRA_JAVA_OPTS to an higher value.

I had now 2 times the issue that this config ist lost and the EXTRA_JAVA_OPTS are set back to default.
How can this happen? Is it overwritten when I make an update?

And also: Is this config inside the backup/restore function of openhab? I could not find it.

Thanks for your help in advanced.

Second question I just answered by myself. I made update to latest 2.5 and the canfig stay same.
So which event can overwrite it? It was definitly opverwritten 2 times since I use different values as default.

I once had the same issue and guess it was changed by one of the updates / upgrades.
However, that was just once and did not happen again.
