Local network connect to OH2 works, VPN to OH2 won't connect

  • Platform information:
    • Hardware: Raspberry Pi
    • OS: openhabian
    • openHAB version: openHAB 2.4.0~20181004001205-1 (Build #1380)

I have OpenVPN setup.
When my phone is connected to my network via vpn:

  • I can ping the openhab server
  • I can get to the HABPanel UI (or other UI’s) via ip address
  • I can not connect to the openhab server from HABDroid (at least I think that’s what the android app is called…)
(I have @ in the Remote > Username field. And the Remote > Password field.

When my phone is connected to my wifi:

  • I can ping the openhab server
  • I can get to the HABPanel UI (or other UI’s) via ip address
  • I can connect to the open server from HABDroid (at least I think that’s what the android app is called…)
(It works even with nothing in the Username/Password)

I’m no network guru so I’m at a loss as to how to troubleshoot…

What have you set as the Local server URL? If you are using the hostname instead of the IP address and you don’t have OpenVPN set up just right then your phone may not be able to resolve the hostname.

You don’t need the username and password in the Local config.

The settings in the Remote config is irrelevant. It is only used when the phone cannot see the URL in the Local Server URL. If it is trying to use the Remote config then it means your phone cannot see the Local address.

I am using the IP address.

I cleared the remote and put the IP in local, still not found.

Is the address in the android app of the format http://<ip address>:8080?

If so I’m out of ideas.

I am using the format http://:8080.

I noticed the droid app had a check to show debug messages, so I checked that.

It said the remote was no configured. I went to remote settings and added the url in there and now it works.

So, I guess I fixed it some how. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
