After upgrading my Pi I can no longer get any logs using log-tail, all I get is garbage.

Not sure this will be posted with ‘log-fences’ as requested, I have no log-fences option in this topic window, nor do I have a preview.

Hopefully someone will have come across this behaviour.

Thanks, Mike.

Stop openHAB.
Delete openhab.log and events.log
Restart openHAB.

If this doesn’t fix the problem then the issue is much more significant and it could be a sign of a corrupted file system caused by a power outage or an SD card that is wearing out.

That worked, thank you.

I also had a file called opehahab.log.1 and events.log.1

They were actually bigger, I killed those too.

It worked for 20 minutes, now it’s back to doing the same.

Did you also reboot in between? If so and still not fixed…

Like Rich mentioned, it looks like a corruption. In that case your only option is to make a backup and save it somewhere, reïnstall (the SD-card or another one) and restore the backup.

Doing a fresh install now.

Not done this for years, hope I remember what to do.

Fingers crossed.

On second thought, it could also be a memory issue. Either memory not freed by some process, or corruption. Before reinstalling, you could check if all memory gets consumed after a while, using top or free command.

Yes I rebooted in-between deleting the logs, it made no difference.

I simply downloaded the openhabian image and installed that.

That wouldn’t work until I reformatted my SD card, as suggested on another thread, so maybe the SD card was misbehaving.

In any case, it is behaving for now, thanks to all for your input.
