MiLight Binding Issues

[DQX (Bas)]

Ok, this is driving me almost insane… I’m running openhab2 on a VM, Debian, and as far as I can see everything is in order but the milight bridge continuously goes offline. Here’s a bit of log file to show what is happening multiple times an hour. Which is a pain in the backside as it sometimes/often happens when issuing commands, and that means lights don’t change. Anyone any idea? I’m ready to chuck this out of the window and invest in hues…

This is just a wild guess, but have you tried using the V2.1 Snapshot Release of the Binding?
Maybe it works there.

The "new" Milight IBox and milight binding

i can tell you what i did: i installed the openhab snapshot release like described here : http://docs.openhab.org/installation/linux.html#package-repository-installation then installed the milight 2.1 binding from paper ui went to inbox and clicked the discovery button [image] then in new newly poped-up window i clicked on milight binding [image] the bridge appeared: [image] i added it as thing [image] all the nice items apeared in the inbox : [image] then selected…

Another guess would be a flaky bridge.
First thing i would do would be resetting it completely.

Then I would have a flaky bridge that works via app… But i think I have found the culprit, and it is not the binding, but apparently my wifi or network drops out every now and then, not enough for terminal sessions but apparently enough for the bridges.

Now I was just about to install a unifi access point so hopefully that will resolve it. If it doesn’t: any way for the sessions to be more persistent?

Nothing that I can think of, except troubleshooting your wifi.
But a Unifi AC is a great start. I use on myself and haven’t regretted it since.
Just check your wifi environment via the controller software for the best possible and most clean channels and you want to hook up your AC with gigabit ethernet. So don’t bend that cat cable to much…the AC tends to switch to 100FDX pretty easily.

Only thing that sucks is the 2,4GHz wifi my bridge has to use.

I’ve recently changed to use the snapshot version and just noticed my logs are showing the same issue.

You’re right, @DQX never mentioned the version he was using in the first place.
If it’s fixed with a new AC which would be unusual, but nevertheless possible then it’s fine.
But if you have the same logs, maybe you two should ask someone in the new milight binding thread.

@David_Graeff I don’t think the keep alive of 3 discovery packets at one second intervals is always sufficient as it looks like the bridge can sometimes take longer to respond.

The logs above are showing the bridge coming back online within a few 100ms and I’m seeing similar behaviour in my logs.

Looking at the changes between 2.0.0 and 2.1.0 it looks as if the 2.0.0 version defaulted the keep alive check to every 2 minutes whereas the 2.1.0 version is checking every 10 seconds which increases the likelihood of the bridge going offline.

I am on the latest snapshot through the package manager, updated last week, I presume that is 2.1.0. It is difficult to verify now as I’m in the middle of setting up VLANs across a switch and a new AP and my installation is down…

Anyhow, I can’t pinpoint exactly when the behaviour started, but I didn’t change my network topology (until this evening that is) and it wasn’t this bad before, of that I am sure.

So even though my network is crap, it worked much better before.

I don’t know the statistics regarding UDP packets but indeed, if only 3 packets are sent with a real possibility they don’t arrive and at the frequency stated, it is almost certain there will be hiccups regularly. Can the binding not be more lenient, or try to reconnect the session instead of throwing the bridge offline?

There are different hardware variants and people have different network topologies, so it’s hard for me to tune the binding to be suitable for everyone. But I can add more configuration parameters, like configuring the delay between re-sending packets.

It is actually the session manager that pulls the bridge offline, but it will also try to bring the bridge back online as quick as possible.
