In light of that information, I’m not entirely sure what to make of the response from above:

me too - i am trying to see why nslookup from a windows box doesn’t seem to show that the windows server, is not forwarding requests it cannot resolve to the router.

I think your windows DNS server is asking the authoritative server (your router) to lookup kitchenenvy.QUEEN.local, or, as you suspect, it is not able to query the router.

i’ll dig in to that - at least i think i am on the right path … thank you!
