New user, MQTT woes

I’m on a fresh install. No mosquitto, only openhab with the MQTT binding.
I’ve configured a broker thing with a hostname of 192.168.178.49, which is my other pi. This has had a status of online for the last 24 hours, no changes in the log.
I’ve added a generic MQTT thing, with text and switch channels configured to:-

state
cbus/read/254/56/248/state

command
cbus/write/254/56/248/switch

The generic MQTT thing says it’s online.

I can read those topics and write to them from my PC using MQTTlens. Should these changes be view-able in the log viewer?

What’s the most straightforward way of testing openhab now?

Created an item from the thing and now I’m getting MQTT state events in the log. I think I’ve cracked it.

Everything is ok now. I’d clearly messed something up in the initial installation.
