Maybe you mean to use the flag button
and choose the option:
“I want to talk to this person directly and personally about their post.”

Then i think you get notifications via email of threads you have posted to or your are following.
If you then instead of going to the thread just answer in the email client you will get a email recipient like:
openHAB Community <replies+94e64dd64af5639c3b6d544d452045d9@community.openhab.org>
And then the forum should automatically recognize you answered from email. And you can continue the badged hunt

Granting of badges takes some times. Also there was once a bug which prevented the automatically recognition. But this should be solved since long.
Maybe just be a bit patient.
Edit: i just got it immediatly.
I think is’s not a problem of the granting, because it’s long ago and the post isn’t shown.
