There is always a more elegant solution to a specific problem, IF you know how to do it. 
I have no idea of Java, and I think Martins code is still useful (untested), as it allows to create a handler/method which can be used universally.
I just started scripting OH rules today and I guess it isn’t possible to use classic handlers, even with parameters?
