The issue here is that the AT command set for R308 is quite different to R309, so the system will simply not work (at all) with R308 (or anything other than 309). Hence the need for the check here. IT doesn’t really impact specific plugs.
I tested this on a version of R309C so it should be fine - it just checks that the version starts with R309.
