Yes, you will need to clear the mosquitto retain database.
I can’t remember how to do it top of my head.

After playing some more and recreating the issues, i think i found the main cause, which thought was interesting.

I had MQTT host setup in Tasmota as “openhabianpi” which does work mostly, apart from the errors in my OP, now i changed my host to actual IP address ie: “192.168.1.22”. With the IP address i have had no issues and can setup topics without issue.

I found it, as when opening the Basic UI in Chrome, using “openhabianpi:8080” it worked 50/50 of the time and the rest i got 404 errors. but with “192.168.1.22:8080” the browser hasn’t error once.
