I also set up a virtual DateTime Item for each Thing called “[thing]_last_report” with a Link back to every Channel, using the “Timestamp on update” profile. The idea is that any activity on any Channel should update the DateTime in this Item

I’m curious here, can you confirm that you have a single DateTime Item linked to several channels, each with a timestamp profile?
This used to be a recipe for disaster.

What pattern metadata does your Item have set?
(Although I suspect this format comes from the binding)
