Just to clear some confusion: OH >= 5.0 doesn’t start if the Java version is less than 21. There’s no need to verify that 21 is installed once it’s running.
EDIT:
Ignore the part of the log files.. I guess I must be tired.. I found them at the right path ofcouse ![]()
I wish I knew.
I have been looking for those, but the path seem to have change sometime. They´re not located at
/var/log/openhab/openhab.log
/var/log/openhab/events.log
This is from the daemon.log file.
Dec 28 16:41:13 openhabian frontail[677]: tail: '/var/log/openhab/openhab.log' has become inaccessible: No such file or directory

Dec 28 16:41:13 openhabian frontail[677]: tail: '/var/log/openhab/events.log' has appeared; following new file
One note though..
Almost all my things are running fine, also rules etc.. Its just that I cant enter anyone of my Things.
I have the frontail logging running all the time. So I know the events are working just fine.
This is how it shows when I try entering a Thing in MainUI. And it just seems like its reloading all the time never showing the Thing and its settings.
This is the openhab.log for recent restart:

Ignore the modbus warnings.. Those are just timeouts.
I simply have no idea how to get those errors fixed, when I cant enter the Things.
Have you tried to clear your browser cache? Since MainUI has been basically replaced, cached objects from the previous version can cause trouble, so it’s worth a shot.
I remember a problem here where a binding was messing up openhab. Sometimes even a rule.
In your case I suggest the following:
Temporarily deactivate bindings (run bundle:stop in oh console) except one binding (like shelly), rules (rename your dsl files) and UIs (remove habpanel and sitemap) and check if the problem persist.
Sorry to say but I am running out of ideas in your case.
Already covered
What is the startlevel of the system? I’ve seen similar issues if the system can’t reach startlevel 100. You can find the startlevel in the API Explorer → systeminfo/get.
Me too.. But Im pleased you´re trying.. This is a killing error somewhere ![]()
Thats that absolut last option I will try, as its gona take alot of time ![]()
Can you point me more exactly, as I have no idea where the API explorer is?
Is this what you mean?
This is the result when I execute

What happens if you access the MainUI via https?
https://10.4.28.127:8443/
and please post the result of this command:
cat /etc/os-release
Are you running a Pi4 or 5?
I get an error:
net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID
Denne server kunne ikke bevise, at den er 10.4.28.127. Computerens operativsystem har ikke tillid til dens sikkerhedscertifikat. Dette kan skyldes en forkert konfiguration, eller at en hacker opsnapper din forbindelse.
In (short) english it says the computer does not have trust in the securitycertificat.
It can be due to a wrong configuration or a hacker is tracking the connection (I do not believe its a hacker though
).

openhabian@openhabian:~ $
Im running Pi4.
There we go. Your OS version is bullseye (Version 11). At least until a while ago Java 21 was not able to run on bullseye. Java 21 requires bookworm (Version 12).
This means you need to upgrade your OS first. I do not know if there is an upgrade procedure available but I assume they are error prone.
My personal opinion is, better backup your openhab config, set up a new fresh version 12 system and restore your config.
… and bullseye lts ends in 8 months.
Well that’s not fully correct. There used to be no v21 openJDK package on bullseye/ARM (don’t know if there is by now, but I doubt this has changed.)
In openHABian our solution was to move to a different Java provider, Temurin that is.
Well, or start from new. In trixie, openJDK is back.
Well, that doesn’t change the fact that this user has problems getting openhab to run under bullseye/temurin21.
If you can proof that this combination works reliably with his huge amount of bindings, then we can continue searching for the root cause of the problem.
I honestly thought that doing apt update, it was taking care of the OS as well..
I just Googled the solution, and it seems like it doesnt ![]()
However at least it looks like there is an rather easy way of updating:
To upgrade Debian 11 (Bullseye) to Debian 12 (Bookworm), first back up your system, then update everything on Debian 11, change your /etc/apt/sources.list to use bookworm instead of bullseye, run sudo apt update, and then perform a sudo apt full-upgrade, finally rebooting to complete the upgrade.
I may give it a try..
Yeah, give it a try. But if it doesn’t instantly work well, please do not spend hours to solve it. Better set up a new system.
In future, if you run into strange problems, remember this thread and upgrade your system first.
Well I don’t know why I would need to prove anything, but about anyone using openHABian Raspi image uses this combination. So if you think you need some proof, there you are.
