Z-Wave database site updates

Possibly - but both the new and old database don’t find such a device. Sometimes these devices have a different model number like ZW1234 or GE1234 or something. What does openHAB tell you the device is?

I’m quite shure you realised someone asking for “z-wave recommendations” in this thread. Bruce is also involved there.
I see this kind of question coming again and again. And often enough i find some valuable info, interesting device …

Looking at your database with lots of z-wave devices (most of, all?), i’d like to see user comments linked to the correspondent item. Or maybe userratings for reliability, batterie lifetime, etc. Did you ever think about this?

Maybe such things should not be mixed up with your technical data. This should be possible i think, although i’m not a database specialist.

If you don’t like the idea, that’s perfectly ok with me. Just an idea while looking at the two treads.

I had a look at the website update but did not spent much time to test. So “looks good!” is all i can say up to now. Well: ATM your site tells me " 502 Bad Gateway". I’m quite shure you are working on it currently.

Nice work, one and all. That’s a terrific upgrade for the database site.

With just a quick look, the one thing I’ve noted (and it’s not clear whether this is intentional or not) is that there are no navigation buttons for search results.

For example: filtering by Fibargroup says 49 results found, but only the first 25 show. That’s fine, however there are no buttons or links that then allow paging through the remaining undisplayed results. If the thinking was that a good search should limit results to below 25 anyway, that’s reasonable, but I think most users will expect to be able to navigate through all their search results.

The current database has a comments system and I will implement this in the new database when I get a chance. I’ve not implemented a ratings - mostly I find people don’t tend to participate in the database and provide the comments. I would really love to get better feedback, and I’ve often wondered about adding this to the binding somehow, but I think that would upset people. My thinking was some sort of anonymised feedback button where people could submit their opinion, and we’d also know if a device was commonly used or not, but I suspect people will think that idea is a bit too “big brother” .

There is also an option in the database for usage comments where people can add information such as battery or anything else - again, most people don’t tend to participate and update the database once they get their own devices working.

I definitely like the idea and would love to have something like this - I’m just not sure that people would actually take the time to go back to the database.

I’ve been out today, but I had some ideas after some googling and will take a look at this.

Thanks for the feedback - I’d welcome any more thoughts you have on my comments above as well :+1:

Correct - at the moment it is limited to 25 in the list. I was looking at making this into an infinite scroll system, but it’s not implemented as yet.

@chris
The OH versions are useful. If it is for a future version, just tag as snapshot?

@yab can you tell me if it’s any better now please? I’ve made a change to the server settings and it’s solved it on my phone, so fingers crossed…

Should be done…

The site shows up fine again.

To be able to comment on a device would be fine. If noboy has to log in, i’d hope even the paranoids [there are enough reasons to get paranoid today - i’m happy i’m not up to now] would comment.

If implementing is not too hard / doesn’t cost too much time, i’d tend to give it try. If you look at the other thread, i’d expect some of the guys from there would like to participate. If it was avalible. And if they new about. I may be wrong. But if it’s not such a big effort …

For the ratings i’m unshure even what to “rate” (like 5 stars out of 5). Reliability is fine. Battery? what does three stars mean? One month. One year? Better lifetime absolutely. What else? Should not be more than 5. My opinion.

To get people to the database, the community can help pointing users there. If i’d be asked for a recommendation knowing about the database, i’d go and put my info there and point others to the database. I’m quite shure i will not be the only one.

While clicking here and there on the new site found some “missing links”:

“CONTACT” links to homepage, no links on “DEV DOC”, “ABOUT” and “home”.

And the registration process does not seem to be fully functional.

Yes, overall the site is still WIP (as per the “under construction” on the main page). I’ve been focussing on the ZWave database so far so really this, and the supporting functions like the ticket system and the ZWave log viewer are about all that I’ve added so far.

Why do you say that? ie please can you say what is not working? I’m going to guess that maybe you didn’t get the email as I noticed you’d registered and I also didn’t get the email saying there was a new registration. I know @mhilbush had this problem and I’m just checking with my provider to see if there is a problem with email.

The registration system should be fully working - if you find something that’s not working, please can you be specific about it so that I can take a look.

I’ve now implemented the infinite scroll function on this page - hopefully this works ok and meets the need here?

If you just scroll down when toward the bottom of the page, another 25 entries should be loaded.

There is also an indicator of how many devices are being displayed now…

I checked, and there shouldn’t have been an issue with outbound email, and I’m well short of the daily max…

This is true. I’ll try to tell the full story:
Selected registration paged, filled in data and nothing happened. Maybe i’ve been too impatient, but i tried a second time. System told me, that the selected user already exited. Tried to login, nothing happened. No changing cursor, no browser telling me “wait a moment”, no error, nada.

Tried to reset passwort, left the house, came back é voilà: there’s a mail with a link to reset my password. Changed password and got success message. Tried to login - nothing happened after pressing “submit”.

Maybe the system is still wating for a reply to an email i never got - as you are suspecting.

You might delete user _yab_ and i’ll try again.

Perfect.

Finally had the time to poke around deeper. The first device I had kicking around that could be added de novo was an aeotec range extender. Adding process is pretty seemless so far with only one comment. Range extenders are fairly low priority devices from an OH control standpoint, I realize, but “Range Extender” or some equivalent is not an available option in the category dropdown on the edit device popup.

That site is not yet live. Please use the old site if you need to add a device.

Yep, just kicking the tires on the new site. As I said, repeaters are low priority and I’ve been perfectly happy to have it passively on my network without adding it to OH for quite some time which is why I’ve never added it to the live database (it’s on the to do list, just not very high up  ). If anything a dry run now is good practice for when I finally get around to the real thing.

The issue here is that the database only allows selection of openHAB categories since ultimately that is what it needs to fit under. I could change this so that a wider set of categories are available, and then when creating the OH binding, reducing this to a subset. I might look at that, but at least that is the reason it is how it is now.

Thanks for taking the time to test, and if you have any other comments etc, I’m certainly keen to hear them.

Got the registration mail at the end (i sent it to your cd-jackson address incl. headers), clicked “here” and since then i’m able to login. Maybe you want to look at the strange mail delay.
