Z-wave issues - Everything looks like its working except it isn't

I started having issues with my Z- wave setup about 2 days ago. It all started when the Echo binding stated crashing my system https://community.openhab.org/t/web-socket-error-on-amazonechocontrol-binding-every-65-seconds/100581/269. I have since then removed the echo binding all together and the system is once again stable but none of my z-wave devices are responding.

  • Hardware Lenovo Thinkcenter M93P / Intel i5-4570T 2.9GHz with 8GB ram
  • OS Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
  • Running openHAB 2.5.5 Release Build
  • Using the z-wave binding from paper UI.

My Serial controller is online and seems ok. All my things are also online. Channels are all populated and everything is green but nothing is working. My openHAB log has nothing but this below. I did a soft reset to get this output. The items that are showing up here I am not sure about but I am pretty sure those were failed pairings that are still in the controller somehow. I need to get rid of them but not worried about that at the moment.

Any Clue on what I can check? I have tried the following.

  • rebooting OH multiple times
  • cleared cache multiple times and rebooted.
  • shut down remove Z-wave stick / add stick back and restart
  • Removed all my bindings and left just Z-wave
  • uninstall Z-wave binding and reinstall
  • Tried removing all z-wave items from the .cfg files but none are found when I scan.
  • When I enable debug in karaf for Z-wave, I don’t see anything that jumps out to me as an issue.

After clearing the cache you may need some stop-start-cycles and let the system settle some time (a few hours should be sufficient) every time it was started.

What did you reset? The controller? The controller stores the Z-Wave network information. Zombie nodes that do not actually exist can cause some stability & routing issues, but devices normally work somewhat.

What sort of devices do you have? Battery operated devices can be a challenge to wake up enough to be fully discovered by the binding.

I have soft reset the zwave USB serial controller via paper UI. Also I figured as much on the stabilizing but I have left it alone for hours after boot over 12 and still I haven’t been able to control anything. As far as devices, I have a bunch of light switches dimming and relay all over the house., door locks (battery operated), wired appliance type modules, a few battery operated sensors, thermostat. Mostly wired switches though.

Seeing some intermittent activity now I was able to toggle a switch a few times. It took 16 hours and 18 minutes without a reboot. :see_no_evil:

I enabled the caldav binding and now it isn’t working again.

I do have many Z-wave devices…

System is not struggling at all.

Regained control after a good 20 minutes or so and slowly adding all my bindings back. Will give update once all bindings are back in.

Added some more bindings and immediately tried to turn off a light. It took 9 minutes to come on so it seems its getting better. After that 9 minutes I am able to turn it on and off with no issues.

Issue seems resolved Z-wave is working now and seems to be stable. Will continue monitoring but thanks for all the help.
