ZRAM install fails

Read the docs https://www.openhab.org/docs/ it recommended the 2gb but didn’t say the rest were untested and had issues, so got what my local retailer had left in stock.
Added zraminstall=disable into openhabian.conf but booting up seems to still try to install it.

There’s on the order of 500 different SBCs, let alone all the x86 variants. Needless to say they’re all untested when we do not mention them, isn’t it.

Again: read the other threads on this topic. Use clonebranch=master with the 1.6 alpha image.

Today I tried installing the latest openHABian (1.6.1) on a new Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB RAM and a USB SSD. first-boot also fails at ZRAM installation/setup. I don’t really know why. I didn’t get any networking errors on the log.

I disabled it in openhabian.conf and openHABian setup went through.

Now I tried to setup ZRAM via openhabian-config, but I’m getting an error:

There was an error or interruption during the execution of: "30 | System Settings"

What to do? Do I even need ZRAM with a USB SSD?

In addition, I set up the debug maximum and tried again, this is what I got:

$ install -m 755 /opt/zram/openhabian-zram/zram-config /usr/local/sbin
+ install -m 755 /opt/zram/openhabian-zram/zram-config /usr/local/sbin

/opt/zram/openhabian-zram/zramsync in fact does not exist.

Booting from external mass storage (USB SSD or whatever) is not supported in openHABian.
No you wouldn’t need ZRAM in that case.

What does that mean for me? I have been using openHABian on an external SSD on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ for a few years now.

I am getting the same/similar errors (There was an error or interruption during the execution of: …) when installing other stuff (InfluxDB+Grafana) via openhabian-config as well.

Can I install it to a SD card and move everything to the USB SSD afterwards (“Move root to USB”)? But I guess that won’t move what’s need for booting to the SSD?

what is the content of the topper part of your debug output ?
The installation fails because the directory with source and compilation seems to miss.
Everything above is correct ?

Here is part of the log file.

It means we didn’t test that so you have to find out yourself.

Ok, I will. I’m kind of surprised that booting from external storage is not officially supported, but I think I’ve read in another post that you are not a fan of booting from SSD

It seems to be working now (after struggling with installation problems of InfluxDB via openhabian-config (it wasn’t able to add the admin user, I had to create it manually and then re-do the config with “pre-existing installation”).

Now on to trying upgrading to openHAB 3 M5

Official support means we need to test it beforehand which is a very time consuming thing - and there’s many many HW variations that all would need to be tested.
SSDs have a number of drawbacks (cost, space, power consumption) and you get nothing in return that is worth the effort of developing/testing.
Noone needs to use them to run openHAB now that there’s ZRAM to mitigate SD wearout.
So those few people that insist on using one can do but have to sort that out for themselves.

Yea, that makes sense.

When you say that SSDs aren’t necessary anymore… What about for example my InfluxDB and other things that sit on the SD card, don’t they contribute to SD wearout even when some part of the system uses ZRAM?

Or can I just move “everything” to ZRAM?

I might have to look deeper into it… Of course I’d like to get rid of the SSD as well if possible, but so far I was under the impression that it’s still better to use one.

if you have the RAM available, yes
There’s an open issue to sort that out. Feel encouraged to do and contribute back with a PR that installs InfluxDB data into /var/lib/openhab/persistence (which is on ZRAM).

Hello all,

i just tried to install OH3 on a fresh system (Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB), 16GB SD card, openhabian v1.6.1 via Rasperry Pi Imager, edited the openhabian.conf file with an other hostname, username, password and enabled maximum logging). After the initial openHAB 2.5 installation was finished, i jumped into openhabian-config and updated OH3 from menu 40. He tries to install OH3.0.0M5, did that (after a few confirmations) and finally he wants to install / start ZRAM. But this fails with

install: cannot stat '/opt/zram/openhabian-zram/zramsync': No such file or directory

After the failure i tried to install ZRAM again from menu 30, but this failed at the very same level. After a reboot i gave it another try but still the same failure. Please find below my latest attempt log:

As this is a brand new fresh install on a new RPi4 with new SD card and latest images i do not know, how to tackle this issue or how i can resolve it. Has anyone a hint how to digg in?

Thanks in advance
Patrick

I am getting similar error with a fresh openhab3 install on rasbian. I noticed job-stop command times out / fails every time I restart and I get a system error 30 when I try to enable / system locks if I try to remove from openhabian-config. This was a new 3.0 download and no options set.

That post is more confusing than helpful.
What did you install where: InfluxDB ? ZRAM ? OH3 ? On pure Raspbian, which version ? on top of openHABian image ? Using which install instructions ?

for me i simply flashed the openhab 3.0 rpi image from the website. Upon a subsequent reboot while I had the device hooked to a monitor I noticed that the “zram-config” service fails to stop - it times out at 5 minutes and 10 seconds. If there is a specific log I can bring up and post the output that would be helpful I can do that. I have not done anything to this system other than the welcome setup within OH - changing hostname and default password for the openhabian system user (done via openhabian-config)
