ZWave binding updates

The problem was the range. I’ve put an active zwave device between my controller and my first node and now it’s working again. But in my opinion it’s kind of strange why the signal seems to be weaker after the update.

This will be totally unrelated - there is no way that the software will have changed the range. Range can change from day to day, and minute to minute… If a device is on the limits of the range, then you will periodically see this.

This seems to be most probable reason.

Without doing any changes (that i know of, running openhabian) i am not able to discovery zwave devices anymore. I see in the logs that something is wrong, but i dont understand it. Anyone seen this before?
Using the latest driver from sept 2.4 on openhabian 2.3

This is what happens when i try to discover zwave from habmin.
After this is done i do not have contact with any devices anymore and i can not see “advance settings” on any devices in habmin. Need to reboot again to get it up and running.

Please provide a complete debug log - from this it’s impossible to say what is happening. The error looks like the binding has been closed and there’s an error while shutting everything down.

Ticket: gVkmJ2LhRQv on your webpage.

If you are having general problems with your network, then I would strongly recommend looking at what is happening using the logviewer.

For example, there is some “bad stuff” happening -:

This shows that node 26 is sending a lot of messages over a short time. This will congest the network and slow down everything else. I don’t know if this is because it has a problem, or if it’s misconfigured, but it is clearly not good and will impact your overall performance. Here we have 13 updates of the power in about 0.5 seconds

Node 62 is doing the same sort of thing -:

I know it’s nice to have super fast updates of all your data, but you need to consider overall performance, and this will really be killing your system in general, and will definately impact on the slow response times you mention in your ticket.

Note also the number on the right (the 2/128) - this shows that quite often there are multiple frames queued waiting for the system to process - ie these messages are delayed because the binding has too much to do and the computer can’t keep up.

In general, there are a lot of exceptions in your log - mostly from MQTT, Telldus and Modbus - there are a total of 4891 exceptions. It’s hard to see if there are any ZWave issues because of this.

I did find the exception about discovery though, but the binding is already shutting down at this time. I can’t find why it’s shutting down, but you can see that even before the exception there are such messages -:

2018-10-14 15:17:21.710 [DEBUG] [WaveSerialHandler$ZWaveReceiveThread] - Stopped ZWave thread: Receive

I’ve tried searching for errors, but there are a LOT - 8395 in this log. Some of these are related to the CAN messages in the ZWave and I will reduce these to debug, but there are a lot of errors from other bindings and the system in general (eg item updates that can’t be found, transformation errors…). It might be worth trying to resolve some of these as well.

I think in your mail you are inferring that node 78 is not working and there is no advanced menu? I think that this node doesn’t exist maybe? It’s hard to be sure without seeing the binding startup logging, but I don’t see anything for this node in the log.

There are a number of CAN messages from the controller. These are normally caused by issues with the communications between the binding and controller and this might be related to the amount of traffic that is being received due to all the meter reports.

I would suggest to look at what is happening with the meter reports and try and reduce this to a manageable level. Ensure that associations are not misconfigured as this can cause multiple messages to be sent - you should only have the lifeline configured, and ensure the controller is not in unnecessary groups. Once this is resolved, let’s see how things look and hopefully we can debug a bit more if there are still outstanding issues.

I hope this helps a bit - I know it doesn’t address the issue that you raised here, but it’s really hard to see what’s happening with so much else going on, so addressing some of the other issues first is probably worthwhile.

Thanks for the respond and for using the time to look at my big problem

Node 26 and node 62 are Nodon plug rele.
Node 26 has not anything at assosication and node 62 is still unknown. (been like this for 2 weeks) its plugged 1 meter away from GW.

MQTT issue is now fixed as the devices was out of battery. It should only be pushed data ever 5 min now.

Modbus for me is a big pain. I have so much old PLS, but have reduced poll time to 10 sec.

On Telldus im using the latest driver to @jarlebh - Maybe this is doing som bad things, as this is the only driver that supports powersensors. I think maybe this driver has died?

I will anywhys use time to sit down and fix the rest of the issues as there are some “lazy mistakes” on transform as you pointed out.

When i try to discover this picture that i sent is happening to all devices. Not only zwave but all. So it seems like more then zwave is crashes, thats why i wanted to show that. But i will try to make it more clean and report back on my ticket. Thanks for the help so far, and please let me know if you have any more tips

Is this error because zwave network is to busy?

It may not be part of the network, but presumably it was previously included, and it is still transmitting data and seriously congesting your system. If it’s not being used, then I would suggest to unplug it or disable it somehow. If you want to use it, it will need to be re-included (which may require resolving the other issues first).

Happy to help (well - trying anyway  ).

Quite probably - if I remember correctly, this is caused when the controller is out of memory so it rejects a request from the binding to send another message.

I just posted an update on your page, but i will also do it here, because if this has something to do with Nodon it can be nice to share it

I see that the common problem is Nodon zwave rele - https://nodon.fr/en/nodon/the-z-wave-micro-smart-plug/

I have tried to edit the config in both paper UI and Habmin without any luck. I have adjusted polling to 900 sec and 100% change before reporting. I have disabled group 2-3-4-5.

But i feel like the settings maybe does not stick. I tried to delete them from habmin but they are still spamming. Can i do something in the the node.xml file to solve it? Or exclude everything and start over?

I have attached the XML file for one of them

Hi all,

One thing is strange. I have now 6 Popp vales properly managed by Openhab with the most recent version of the Zwave binding and I observe two strange things:

One of the Popp valves does not seem to update the battery level. I don’t know why, but it seems it does not work. I have checked 20 times the definition of my item and I’m pretty sure it is the same as the 5 others and yet, the value stays at zero (but the valve works and reports temperatures ok).
I’m not sure where I should look to understand the cause for this?

Also, I have the feeling that there are strange things happening with the values the binding reports (from time to time):

  • I have a rule that fires everytime the setpoint for the valves are changed and sends me a mail with the previous and new value… In several occasions I have seen values reported by the rule that I can’t set neither via the valve directly nor via openhab e.g. 9.7, while I allow only value from 0.5 to 0.5 degrees, and I don’t think anyone had touched the valve

  • I have occurences of my history of temperatures measured going to +2000°C… I have even seen the setpoint at 0° while the valve does not support that…

I know it looks really strange… I previously had the same valves managed via an old Zibase and did not see any of those strange cases… Any ideas of where I should look to understand the cause of this?

Thanks,

Yes - you will need to provide a debug logfile. This will show exactly what is being received and will show if the problem is a binding problem or a device problem. I should say that it’s pretty unlikely it’s a binding issue as decoding of temperatures is pretty well tested and every time someone reports this sort of thing, it is an issue with the device. Still, if you provide the log, we can easily confirm either way.

Hell Chris,

Thanks for the support. For the battery level at zero, this is what I was able to catch in the log:

Should I understand that the device is reporting 0 and so that I should RMA it?

For the strange values changes caught by the rule, I'll need to think a bit more on how I'll catch the event I'm interested in as it happens only a couple of times a day... I'll see what I can come up with and will report back.

Thanks,

Please can you provide a few more lines of the log from just before this - you’ve missed the received data for the battery command which I’d like to check.

Ah, yes, sorry. I have just edited the previous message to avoid spamming the forum:-)

Thanks. So this confirms that the battery is reporting a value of FF, which just means “Low Battery”. If the battery is new, and it’s still reporting this, then I guess it is likely faulty.

Upgraded to 2.4 snapshot yesterday. But I have seen two outages for the z wave binding since then - it seems the binding is no longer able to communicate with the network or the stick.

Situation is remedied by restarting the z-wave bundle. No obvious error message from the log as far as I can see. I think the problem happens at 19:49:51

Much longer Z-wave log is available at ticket yT9Gzk7HvBd on cd-jackson.com

Aeotec z-stick gen 5.

As per the other ticket, I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary in your log. The controller is still communicating after the problem at around 19:47, but I don’t see anything that indicates a problem.
