I’m and old Java Programmer developing and supporting an open source project http://www.commander4j.com who has been looking for something genuinely interesting which turned out to be AI. I have recently kitted out my house with Google Home and Philips Hue and had very few issues. Looking at the commercial smart hubs I found that some were based on old technology, bad ports from Windows to Linux or just badly supported. After a quick look at this project - it’s architecture and rapid support from the community I was very impressed and have made good progress already.
