What is the battery for in the Z stick?
I assume it charges when it is attached to a (powered) usb port

The stick can be used stand-alone for include/exclude operations. This is handy because some devices need to be included directly, but need to be installed to operate. Door locks, wall switches, etc., you can take the stick to the installed device.
