Cannot Exclude a NuTone Z-Wave Device

Hardware: Intel Q9650 on Dell 0G261D motherboard
OS: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
JRE: OpenJDK 1.8.0_192
OpenHAB 2.5.0

I have several NuTone NWO15Z wall outlets that I’d previously installed on my system. At a point in the past I had to replace my Aeotec Z-Wave stick, and since that time I’ve not been able to add them back to my system. I’ve tried to first exclude them in every way I can, with both the Habmin and BasicUI exclusion tool, but it doesn’t seem to be working as I cannot re-discover the switches. Admittedly the documentation on these now discontinued switches is thin, but it suggests that I only need to press the action button during exclusion mode. And I’ve tried pressing the button, holding it, and swearing at it but nothing seems to work.
I’ve successfully excluded other devices in the past. Is there any other way to exclude and re-include them?

Have you tried using exclusion mode on the stick itself: take it out, press and hold the button until it flashes orange, bring it near the device, and then use whatever button sequence the device calls for.

Have you tried to factory reset the devices? I had to do that with some cheap Chinese devices. Some manuals instruct to reset if the controller is not available.

Interestingly, I did another search on the model number and found an Amazon review for a GoControl WO15Z (gotta be the same device rebranded!). It stated the documentation was wrong and I needed to press the action button twice to exclude it. I’m sure I tried every combination before, but this worked. So maybe my timing was incorrect.
So in short, quickly pressing the action button twice while in exclude mode did the trick.
