Can't use the OpenHAB App via VPN

I forgot to state that I am using the local access via https as well, and yes the VPN is automatically used by the openHAB App.

Strange… I don’t know why it doesn’t work. However since the app now shows the sitemap when using vpn (even though it’s via remote access) I don’t care that much.

If the App states remote access I would not assume a working VPN connection!

The vpn connection is perfectly fine. I can

  • access the internet via vpn
  • access devices in my LAN
  • even access openhab. For example: in my browser port 9001 for the log, port 3000 for grafana and port 8080 for basicui and port 22 for ssh.

Does https on port 8443 work via browser when connected via VPN?

It opens a blank page with nothing on it and downloads a small (11 Bytes) file. I assume this is some kind of certificate… I can’t upload the file since the forum doesn’t allow this kind of file.

So openhab responds but not properly with the expected information.

Since I am on holidays right now I can’t test what happens if I open that page when I am at home…

Hi, I just tested this with my FritzBox 7490 VPN, both http (8080) and https (8443) connections via the app are working for me over the VPN.

I’m using the official version, not the beta version.

Regards, Christian

Edit: 8080 for http, not 8000 of course

Strange… I just downloaded the non beta openhab app. Http 8080 works, https 8443 doesn’t work (error shown in my first post)

I also use the 7490.

However since http works and it’s only in my LAN it’s okay for me

I’m coming into this a bit late but I wanted to say that I use OpenHAB via my VPN (I run an OpenVPN server) and that has been available to me since I set it up. There is no reason why this could not work for you but I need to know more.

Two questions…

  1. I’m not familiar with your VPN… is AVM a full VPN or just a service port proxy? Is that a physical device that sits on your local network or does it run elsewhere?
  2. Are you sure you don’t have firewall policies downstream or outside of your VPN that might be blocking TCP/8080 or anything else you are using?

The other thing you mention is “OpenHAB cloud”. Is your OpenHAB server running on your local network or elsewhere?

My quick gut response tells me that there is something unintended being blocked that is outside the scope of the specific VPN bits but I don’t understand your architecture yet.
