Continuation lines in items and sitemaps?

Is there a syntax for continuation lines in sitemap and items files?
I tried a trailing \ but that did not seem to work.

I think you just use a new line. Nothing else required. Seems to work for me, at least on Items. I would expect it to work the same for sitemaps as well.
