Dynamic Icons Via Rules

I’m currently using postUpdate() to change the value of a number of items in my sitemap. Is there a way to also modify the item icons from a rules file?

I found exactly what I’m looking for part way down the page here. Well, it’s a little convoluted, but it works, and seems to be the only way of doing what I need.
