Ecobee3 & registration - what for?

I’ve drunk the OpenHab kool-aid and look forward to eventually contributing where I can but I’m wondering about how Ecobee3 integrates with it.

As I understand it, you have to register Ecobee3 to get API keys to provide some services but is this really necessary afterward? I don’t need access via phone if I can use the OpenHab client instead. I’d like to keep my home network isolated wherever possible.

The Ecobee binding gains access through the web API, not through a local interface.
