The topic is kinda misleading, you want to clean up the log but the goal is to remove the non existent items so the log does not get flooded with wrong/old information.
Question is, did you really delete the old items/things?
Did you clean the Cache? Clear the Cache
You could also use the openhab-cli to list all things/items and remove them. openhab-cli doc
