How do you block iRobot OTA firmware updates?

Since I suspect that the last firmware update installed on my Roomba 980 has broken integration via the iRobot binding, I’d like to prevent any future upgrades, in the hope that the binding will be updated at some point.

I’ve heard it mentioned that you should use the parental controls setting in the router, but which URL should be blocked? Is there a specific firmware URL that can be blocked without affecting the iRobot app when on wifi?

Did you find it?

I did it this way:

  • Configured my router to give the Roomba always the same IP address
  • Configured my router to prohibit internet connection for this IP

So the Roomba is only allowed to communicate in the internal network

No updates anymore

Once I found an interesting video about hacking of these devices which eventually led to formation of another open source project: FAQ | Valetudo

It is an alternative, but probably not an replacement as there are far more brands than people able to ‘hack’ them.
