Install failing on Raspberry Pi 5

  • Platform information:
    • Hardware: P5 4 GB
    • OS: Openhabian 64 bit 2024-08-06
    • Java Runtime Environment: which java platform is used and what version
    • openHAB version: loaded via the Pi Imager
  • Issue of the topic: I’ve loaded the OpenHabian OS 64 bit image onto a 32GB SD card, inserted it into the Pi, connected an HDMI cable and powered up.
I can see it looking for the network, and then failing over to start the local hotspot.
However the hotspot is never visible on my laptop or phone when I select the network icon on these devices.
The annoying thing is it worked two months ago when I did the same on a Pi4 with 2GB of RAM.

Has something changed in the image being pulled down by the Pi Imager ?

If I insert the SD card back into my PC I can see two partitions.

  • bootfs and rootfs
bootfs has a file “first-boot.log” but this has no contents.

Plugging in a monitor shows he console is displaying “failed to start comitup.service”

Googling this brings up a range of options but as the server is running headless without a keyboard I can’t issue commands.

Providing values in the openhabian.conf file before booting i.e. while SD card is in the original imaging host machine:

  • SSID, Password, Country Code

Maybe save yourself some trouble by plugging it into a wired network to get started.
Maybe try wireless later

not bad advise. I’ve done exactly that when playing with a Pi and trying to load up fresh OH. Wireless wouldn’t play nice. Ethernet cable instantly cured the problem.

Thanks for the help. I’ve got it going now.
I was using the Pi Imager on my Ubuntu box. Interesting I only had controls to choose the distribution and the storage disk. Write and Verify worked ok. Even changing the SSID/Password did not allow the Pi 5 to start up the wifi hotspot.
So I then used my wife’s laptop running Win 10, installed the Pi Imager. This time I had three controls: Pi board type, distribution and storage disk. Followed exactly the same process as I had on the Ubuntu host.
This time the wifi was detected and the Pi connected to it.
Now I can get going on the integrations I want to use.

thanks for reporting and good on ya for finding a solution

So manual Wi-Fi config worked. Have you also tried omitting that?
That should fire up comitup i.e. the hotspot software component.

I tried the version written by the Ubuntu imager twice, both with, and without the wifi connection details.

  • When they were not supplied comitup started but the hotspot was not visible on my phone or laptop.
  • When they were supplied the Pi did not appear on the router DHCP lease list

I then switched to the Pi imager running on a Win 10 laptop.

  • When they were not supplied comitup could not be started.
  • When they were supplied the Pi appears on the router DHCP lease list and I could browse to openhabian.local:8080 etc

Try again with just released openHABian 1.9.2, please.
Don’t use the Ubuntu imager - I don’t know if it’s up to date and what image it downloads.
Better: download image yourself to be sure it’s 1.9.2 then use ‘custom’ image in imager.
