Hi,
I got sick and tired of fighting with my USB KNX interface. it works fine for weeks, months, then just suddenly stops, timeouts, errors, knxd crashes…usually can be recovered by reboot of the machine, where OH is running as well, so major PITA.
this time I cannot recover from the error even after several poweroff/poweron cycles.
Now, the story is that all those USB KNX interfaces use HID which is disaster.
Much better and recommended way to go is TPUART interface. (according to knxd community around the web).
Now I would like to avoid fiddling with knxd and those interfaces alltogether and get ethernet knx gateway.
My question is, will this be carefree experience of setting the IP and port of the new interface to openhab, and never speak about it again. Or it is also fiddly, unstable shitty experience?
What are those ethernet gateways exactly? because if it’s actually usb hid interface hidden in a small box with something like rpi zero that runs something like knxd on ethernet interface, then we are back at square one
Any recommendation for specific hardware, are all gateways the same or it’s a hit and miss? Looking forward to robust recommendations that will send this topic to oblivion once and for all
I have this one. I’ve had it for maybe three or four years. Rock solid, I don’t think I’ve lost communication a single time for reasons related to the interface.
I am using a KNX IP interface from Weinzierl Engineering, I don’t think you can still buy it today so I don’t think it’s name would help you, but all I can say it works stable for at least 7 years now.
as always with KNX hardware: you can get them from various vendors and manufacturers.
USB interfaces are good for setting KNX up, you can hook them up to your laptop and program your KNX “network” directly from your ETS.
if you’re on a single home only and don’t have multiple lines, a “KNX IP Interface” does the trick stable and reliable, no need for a (more expensive) “KNX IP Router”, which does all the Interface can plus acts as a line coupler and other stuff.
tl;dr>
go for a “KNX IP Interface”, I use also the “Weinzierl KNX IP Interface”, but there’s also ones from all kinds of manufacturers.
I am using the KNX IP Interface secure (IPI.1.8.2) from CONTROLtronic since 2022 as my old one stopped working.
It seems pretty stable and was not expensive, but I am not sure if they still sell it.
