my analog thermostats drive me crazy, either we freeze (<18°C) or sweat (>25°C) nothing in between is possible.
As we live in a rental flat, big changes to the heating are not possible, so I’m thinking of just changing the thermostats to digital ones, which are hopefully more accurate or can be controlled better..
So why not using one’s which I could integrate within openhab… e.g. via matter (as I do not have Zigbee or anything either)..
And that’s where I’m already lost.
Read ton’s of posts, matter overviews, but for me it’s still unclear:
I do not have any kind of Homepod, Apple TV or anything else which is required (???) as a matter controller..? openhab itself cannot act as the controller..?
My Iphone will act as a ‘initial’ controller, but just for the setup ?
So without buing an additional hub, pod or similar, I cannot controll the Eberle thermostats via some OH rules ?
The OpenHAB Matter binding does make OH a Matter controller
You only need a hub, called a Border Router, if the matter device is a Matter over Thread device only
If the matter thermostat is WiFi or Ethernet connected, no Border Router is needed.
Most WiFi thermostats require a cloud connection, which are best avoided
A Matter Thermostat that is not Battery operated is my strong suggestion.
The OH Binding can provision Matter devices. The decision of what you use for the “initial” provision is “which is easier”
The Initial controller will generate a new code that is used to provision the second controller.
Once both controllers are setup, both operate independently and when one updates the the thermostat, the thermostat tells the other, “hey, I just changed”
If the location of your Thermostat is not optimal for measuring temperature and humidity, Matter temperature and humidity sensors might be useful to have a cozy home. Temperature and humidity sensors are usually battery operated. This can drive a requirement for a border router as WiFi is notorious for draining batteries
If and only if Eberle devices provide Matter over WiFi. You’ll have to find that out from them.
You wouldn’t unless they do not provide Matter over WiFi and only provide Matter over Thread. Thread requires a difference set of antennas and hardware compared to BT and WiFi.
If Eberle Devices support Matter over WiFi you need nothing extra.
If Eberle Devices (or any other device you are looking at) onyl support Matter over Thread you require a TBR like an Apple TV or Echo Show or the like.
