- I have been using OH for 4+ years. I’ve been using OH 2.4 for a couple of months.
- I am using the Aeotech Z-stick Gen5. It has not been moved from it’s original location.
- I am using the GE 12724 dimmers and GE 14294 switches
- I have OH installed on a Synology storage device
- I have about 14 dimmers/switches (hard-wired, obviously) and about 5 battery-operated sensors.
Today I noticed some of the devices were taking about 5-10 seconds to respond. I then realized some lights were not turning on at all - not even by toggling the physical switch.
I opened OH PaperUI and saw 4 devices that have COMMUNICATION_ERROR. These devices were not responding to any commands. I tried troubleshooting with one of them, removing, adding the device, with no luck. Below is from the event log:

I restarted OpenHAB which didn’t help. I also unplugged the z-stick and plugged it back in; again, no luck.
I came across (SOLVED) After a restart, most Zwave nodes are stuck on REQUEST_NIF. But the OP’s solution was to reset everything and start from scratch. Not exactly something I want to do.
I also came across [SOLVED] openHAB 2.4 Z-Wave Dimmers update issue Add-ons. However, I’ve been using 2.4 for a couple of months with no issues. I still read through the replies. Some of the suggestions include (1) change the “Command Poll Period” from 1500 to 3000 - didn’t help, (2) having to update the channel names due to some undocumented changes - did not apply to me, the channel did not change, (3) unplugging the z-stick and plugging it back in - already tried it, no help.
I’m a little hesitant to delete the Z-wave binding and adding it back in. Will it install a 2.5 version of it? I’d rather hold off on doing this (and hold off on updating to OH 2.5 for now).
If the switches are not working when toggling the physical switch, could it be the switches? Could 4 die on the same day? Finding this hard to believe, I even made sure the light bulbs are in fact working (they are working fine…not burnt out).
One of those posts suggested maybe the z-stick is failing. But would it only affect some devices/nodes and not others?
What can be causing the COMMUNICATION_ERROR? What else can I do to troubleshoot?
Thanks!
