Paper UI replies Error 500 - a lot

  • Platform information:
    • Hardware: Rasp Pi 2
    • OS: Raspian 8 Jessee
    • Java Runtime Environment: Oracle Java 8 Build 151
    • openHAB version: 2.2.0-1
  • Issue of the topic: paper UI receives error 500 when updating ‘things’

No logs apparent. But error 503 is received consistently by the Paper UI when ‘things’ are updated (e.g. Changing Location).

Debugging the interface (Safari web developer) the network timeline shows 503’s coming back for accesses to ‘config’ ‘things’ ‘items’ ‘bindings’ and the ‘thing’ being updated.

Looking at the return the server is saying that ‘Jersey is not ready yet’.

e.g.

<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8"/>
<title>Error 503 Jersey is not ready yet!</title>
</head>
<body><h2>HTTP ERROR 503</h2>
<p>Problem accessing /rest/things. Reason:
<pre>    Jersey is not ready yet!</pre></p><hr><a href="http://eclipse.org/jetty">Powered by Jetty:// 9.3.22.v20171030</a><hr/>

</body>
</html>

Try Clear the Cache first.

Sorry, I seem to have managed to post this same error twice… I got an error on the first and thought it didn’t go through.

Anyway, clearing the cache was the first thing I did… And it didn’t make a slight bit of difference.

Actually, that may have been premature… Now I get lots of errors in the logs as well as the 500 server errors…

I must say that OH 2.2.0-1 is… extremely frustrating.,…

Now while it’s infinitely better at running my rules than the snapshots were… It severely fails on simple things like the PaperUI actually working, or the ability to add & remove items…

e.g. I tried to add a new item to an online Wave device (Node 19 - it’s a TKB wall wart switch. They work fine usually, I have several).

Adding was weird. PaperUI didn’t as me to configure the item on the channel. It just said done… But of course it hasn’t actually created anything. Except a ghost… Which can’t be used… Or apparently removed…

2017-12-20 09:23:32.785 [WARN ] [rest.core.internal.item.ItemResource] - Cannot update existing item 'zwave_device_783409c6_node19_switch_binary', because is not managed.

No idea what that means or how to resolve it… And of course the ever present “Error 500’s” are still with us despite cleaning the tmp and cache directories as mentioned previously.

I don’t know the source of the 500 errors nor what caused the error above, but the “is not managed” means that for whatever reason OH either thinks that zwave_device_783409c6_node19_switch_binary does not exist or it is defined in a .items file.

Since the latter seems unlikely I would guess something went wrong during the creation of that Item.

Look in /var/lib/openhab2/jsondb and search through those files for that Item. If it doesn’t appear then you will know the Item doesn’t exist. If it is there but looks wrong (e.g. missmatched quotes or brackets, doesn’t look the same as other Items in that file) then your jsondb became corrupted somehow.

The device is in there… In the file org.eclipse.smarthome.core.thing.link.ItemChannelLink.json and looks fine… Or at least, fine to my inexperienced eye.

“zwave_device_783409c6_node19_switch_binary -\u003e zwave:device:783409c6:node19:switch_binary”: {
“class”: “org.eclipse.smarthome.core.thing.link.ItemChannelLink”,
“value”: {
“channelUID”: {
“segments”: [
“zwave”,
“device”,
“783409c6”,
“node19”,
“switch_binary”
]
},
“configuration”: {
“properties”: {}
},
“itemName”: “zwave_device_783409c6_node19_switch_binary”
}

I managed to get an exception logged (Presumably for one of the HTTP errors at the time)…

I don’t have any PaperUI defined Items to compare with but -\u003e looks suspicious to me. Do your other Items look like that, with the -\u003e?

Do you find the Item in /var/lib/openhab2/jsondb/jsondb/org.eclipse.smarthome.core.items.Item.json?

Unfortunately, that log is incomplete. I need the lines above the at lines to see what the actual problem was. These only show where in the call stack the error occurred and therefore only tells me that it is during some part of the config, which we already knew.

Yeah. All the zWave entries have the \u003e in the definition… I assumed it was a separator between the Label and Name… 3e… That would be the ASCII encoding for a colon : (I assume that something URI encodes the strings for some reason)

I would include more lines, but the lines above don’t seem to be related to the PaperUI issue. They’re just messages from rules firing etc. e.g. this evening while trying to update the properties on a Wave switch (Auto timeout increase from 3 hours to 6 hours on a Qubino dual switch) (I don’t THINK the message about no node 255 is connected, I get those just after start anyway - they eventually stop & go away)
