Smb share issue

Having an issue setting up samba to work with my windows pc. fresh install of 3.4.1. followed the officail guide but still struggling. the log is showing errors. Update. I can see the share from my iPhone. I just get an error when trying to move more home.items files over for instance. Most of my setup is textual config and I’ve had a major system failure that I couldn’t cure with a backup file. Using windows 8.

anyone having the same issue or offer some advise on how to get it going please?

I would try to fix this:

Permissions I see here on my directory:

ls -ld /var/log/samba/cores/
drwx------ 4 root root 4096 Oct 16 2021 /var/log/samba/cores/

My ownership of the file

drwxr-x--- 4 root root 4096 Feb 6 20:26 /var/log/samba/cores/

That is what is written in the message file.
0700 ( mine ) vs. 0750 ( yours ).

Try to do

sudo chmod g-rx /var/log/samba/cores

Afterwards a restart of the samba service

That’s has fixed the permission issues above but still can’t make the transfer of files from my iPhone to the share. Also what is the correct path I should be using on windows? \192.168.1.100 for instance?

Global parameters if needed.

There’s also a warning when I run samba-tool testparm

WARNING 2023-02-07 09:16:02,602 pid:18650 /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/samba/netcmd/testparm.py #184: You have some share names that are longer than 12 characters. These may not be accessible to some older clients. (Eg. Windows9x, WindowsMe, and not listed in smbclient in Samba 3.0.)

Just seems strange how I can access it from my phone with smb:192.168.1.100 but can’t on my computer using //192.168.1.100. I need to access the share as I’ve always edited them with visual studio.

Hope I can find a quick fix as I currently have no control over any devices in my home :joy:

Tried to remove samba and reinstall but now I’m getting all sorts of errors. Openhabian won’t even let me download new updates for packages! So another fresh install it will be tonight! Get samba up and running and fingers crossed I’m away

Needs to be double backslash. In case your OH installation is installed on computer with the IP you provided it will be \\192.168.1.100 and the related share needs to be added.
Shares that are exported are in brackets. Thus you will get

\\192.168.1.100\oepnHAB-userdata
\\192.168.1.100\oepnHAB-conf
\\192.168.1.100\oepnHAB-addons
\\192.168.1.100\oepnHAB-sys

The warning says everthing The above mentioned sharenames ( like openHAB-userdata ) are longer than 12 characters. This is based on 8.3 rule for file names ( 8 characters for the name, a dot, 3 characters for file extension ). For newer versions it is not a problem and being used by other openhabian users.

Would have been interesting to see all these errors. If you cannot do updates/downloads then this sounds like files cannot be executed. There are a few reports about losing the x bit of executables after running fix permissions. But root cause is not known as far as I remember.
That is why it would have been good to now more about the exact error messages and how this happened.
