[SOLVED] openHABian inital setup problem: [ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-serial1.device

Have you tried " sudo systemctl status openhab2.service" in order to check if OH is running or not?

sudo systemctl status openhab2.service

Returned:

Does the same thing happen when you do
sudo systemctl restart openhab2.service

Restarted and ran the same command as before to get the error log:

● openhab2.service - openHAB 2 - empowering the smart home

If it will allow you, try to use sudo openhabian-config and select openhab stable. Maybe something was missed in the original image install?

Done.
Restarted and opened the log again:

Keep using the openhabian tools to Upgrade System and Apply Improvements (packages as well as the other selections).

Done both.

Thanks to everyone for their help - I am giving up and switching my efforts to Home Assistant.

@Doop enjoy your new venture. Let us know how it goes.

On your current issues though, I would say. I believe you may have a java error. I was having a similar problem as you were on my Ubuntu virtual machine. I used openhabian to do install java and magically everything worked. I am not sure what the install difference was and I want to work with this issue more so I can document and have it fixed.

I still believe though you may have a power supply issue on your pi. There were several people that had problems similar to your initial freeze problem and it was found that a power supply was the culprit. Keep in mind moving away from openHAB but keeping the same hardware just means a failure later. So I encourage you to tuck the potential power supply issue away for now and if strange behavior appears later then you can address it. If nothing ever comes of it, then consider me wrong and enjoy automating!

I would state the same. Had that on a rasp with a power supply with less then 2Amps. The installation of openhabian stopped always at the same spot ( not the same as the OP).
Changing the power supply helped me out.

Hello there

I have the extract same problem installation openhabian on a raspberry pii b+, have been switching power cables, power supply, microsd card, using etcher, preformatted the card, without any change.

Any help will be appreciated, if someone finds the trick

Thank you in advance

Regards
Mikael

@mikaelbnielsen there are a few problems here? Which one?

Bought a new Pi, Model 3B which works fine and has had no problems so far.

Still no idea of the cause

Glad to hear you are up and running. Have you tried the other rpi using the new power supply? If it works, that would verify the issue.

I had the same issue on a Raspberry pi 2.

Initially i was using a 0.5A power supply and it did report an “undervoltage detected” and then “[ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-serial1.device]”

I switched to a 2.0A power supply, but i still got “[ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device dev-serial1.device]”, it continued with the next task - installing openHab, but soon after my screen (via. HDMI) turned all black, it was unresponsive and nothing appeared to happened, except the green led on the pi indicated som sort of activity on the SD card - i guess that is equivalent to the hdd led om my pc.

I left it running over night, next morning i still had black screen - i did a reboot of the pi, it booted up without issues, and openHab seems to be running fine now.
