Some help with understanding what this error flood really mean

One of my pet peeves with Java is it’s uncanny ability to generate incomprehensible errors but this one is going to win the prize for the most worthless error notification ever.

I just looked at the openhab.log file when I spotted this beauty. I have absolutely no idea what binding or module caused it, what is the fault or what to do about it. I’m running 2.3 on a W10 PC.

The odd thing is that everything is looking to work correctly, except that this error message makes il look as if something terribly wrong happened but the Java Gods decided I’m not worthy of a clear and concise explanation.

It’s a crazy stack trace, but I think it’s caused simply by closing the OpenHAB App. A connection is kept open so that the UI updates in real time when item state changes occur. The java process on the server is just logging the fact that the connection was closed by the remote host (the app).

i.e. it’s completely benign and doesn’t even belong in the logs. It bubbles up through so many methods though, I’ve got no idea where would be logical to catch the exception and ignore it.

I agree that it’s probably benign, since the system seems to be working correctly, but it’s also beyond stupid. I read it until I got tired and the only thing I managed to get is that the error collecting system is overly verbose while still being singularly unable to provide meaningful information. Two for the price of one!

For the end user yes. For the developer all that information tells the developer exactly what line of code the error occurred on and the trace of how the code came to execute that line.

What is interesting about this error is none of it takes place in ESH or OH code, it’s all in code ESH/OH runs upon.

Ultimately, the error is caused but the Jetty web server writing a response to a client and the client closed the connection before the server was done sending the response.

Thank you for the explanation. So if I’m understanding this correctly the error is generated by a process outside of OH but is caused by a process within OH that close too soon and it’s impossible to identify it because this information is not collected and displayed by jetty?

IIRC, this has been resolved, but there is still an open issue. There are also several reports of it in the forum. A lot has been fixed or changed since 2.3. I’m on the snapshots and don’t recall seeing it for quite a while. I think it was happening when using the mobile app. When I was seeing it, I had hidden it by turning off logging for org.glassfish.jersey…

Sort of. The error is caused by the remote client abruptly closing the connection to the OH server. The OH server is surprised by this loss of connection and generates an error.

The error is generated deep in library code that OH relies upon.

The fix Scott mentions is probably to catch this error and ignore it instead of logging it, or at least move the log to a debug or trace level, because while that library thinks it’s a really big deal when we lose that connection, since it cannot complete doing what it was asked to do, from our perspective as OH users, we don’t care if our OH clients disconnect abruptly.

Unfortunately it also demonstrate a weakness in which the first thing that should be reported is who did it? The what and when are less important IMHO and if it’s something we can fix in OH then that would be a good thing.

Luckily Scott’s answer to give glassfish the STFU treatment worked like a charm and did wonders to prevent my next panic attack. Pity it’s something that need to be entered in the console every time the OH server start. Oh well…

First line of the error is just that:

Two lines down is gives the exact line of the exact Class where the error occurred

Not if you are the developer who has to fix it. In that case the what and when is far more important than the who. It’s the what and when that tells you what is actually going wrong and how to fix it.

As I implied above, this particular error should never have surfaced to the OH user level. It is not an error intended for us. It is intended for the developers.

See Log4j2 Sample Config to make the configuration permanent. I think the default logging in the karaf console starts with the logging config.
