Trying to get Ipcamera Binding to work with Vstarcams

Raspberry PI 4 Openhabian
openHAB 3.2.0.M4

I have a bunch of different models of Vstarcam that support ONVIF and trying to make things work.

  1. I have Trace enabled to watch the activity.
  2. I can connect to the camera (Thing shows ONLINE) … I used auto discovery … I changed the default “Poll Time” to 2000 (was getting timeouts at 1 sec)
  3. Tried getting an image via the URL (http://IP:8080/ipcamera/100057/ipcamera.jpg) but it doesn’t return a result. Log shows:
==> /var/log/openhab/openhab.log <==

2022-07-10 16:07:53.099 [WARN ] [amera.internal.servlet.CameraServlet] - ipcamera.jpg was requested but there was no jpg in ram to send.
2022-07-10 16:07:53.115 [TRACE] [era.internal.handler.IpCameraHandler] - Sending camera: GET: http://10.0.0.54:38254/snapshot.cgi

However, I can access the image using the http://10.0.0.54:38254/snapshot.cgi
Also, in my openHAB-userdata/ipcamera/100057 directory it is empty. (Not sure if that’s relevant)

  1. Tried getting an mpeg via the URL (http://10.0.0.23:8080/ipcamera/100057/ipcamera.mjpeg) … no luck. Log shows:

  1. Tried panning but get no activity … log shows:

Sorry for the huge log but not sure what is helpful info … so in summary, it appears that the binding is communication with the camera via ONVIF based on the XML responses but not getting any activity from the camera. FYI, I can use a generic OSX app to talk to the cameras via ONVIF and get video, audio and PTZ features.

As I said, I have multiple versions of these cameras, this particular one seemed to give the best results, none of them worked (i.e. got images or panning)

Ideas for me to try?

What happens if you run this command in the linux terminal? Make sure you change some of the hashes if posting the output in public so people can not get your user/pass by looking at the output.

curl -i --digest -u admin:password --verbose http://10.0.0.54:38254/snapshot.cgi -H "Connection: close" --no-keepalive

That’s normal, the only time you would see files if if you record, or if you use the HLS features.

I’m guessing that it may be the camera does not support TCP and can only do UDP streams.
What happens if you enter this
-rtsp_transport udp
into the FFmpeg Input Options config?

Another guess may be the camera is reporting the wrong port. rtsp://10.0.0.54:10554/tcp/av0_1 normally it is port 554 without starting with a 10 for RTSP. A quick google shows that some do appear to use that port but some also use these urls…

http://192.168.16.3:242/videostream.cgi?user=admin&pwd=888888
rtsp://ip:port/udp/av0_0

If you find a url that gives you native MJPEG instead of rtsp, it would be better to override the auto detected url and use that instead so that FFMPEG does not transcode the stream and use CPU.

Not all cameras support AbsoluteMove, some will only work with continuous or relative movements and others require PRESETS to move. There is a free program called ‘onvif device manager’ that can be used to test all of these but it may be only for PC and not mac. There is a OH3 widget in the marketplace that makes sending the first 3 methods easy, but the presets being the 4th method does need them to be created in a different program first before the widget can send them.

Thank Matt for your reply … I’ll do some testing later today and post the results … I’ve made a little more progress as well (seeing mpeg working) … I also think there is something related to the default 888888 password which I have found is needed for some of the ONVIF PTZ operations.

Will post detailed logs later to your questions.

Ok tried this, here is the log:

Ok … interesting … I tried with both the cameras password I set and the default one “888888” that I believe is the password still in use for ONVIF (I confirmed this via a ONVIF python app i.e. it worked with 88888 and failed with the normal password)

What happens if you enter this
-rtsp_transport udp
into the FFmpeg Input Options config?

Ok so first retried the mpeg with tcp (default) … I have found that it works on 4 of my 8 cameras (various firmware versions) … so some progress on that. Here is the log when it worked:

and now the log when using UDP - no stream is returned. (retried multiple times same results)

I tried both with “Use Continuous PTZ” on and off and get the same results (no movement). Log is the same either way:

Using some Python ONVIF I can get the PTZ to move using:

but only if I use the 888888 password … strange but have seen some discus topics indicating that is normal.

I’ll checkout the widget … I can probably write a function to do the PTZ for these cameras but was hoping to use the binding for all the interaction.

Changing the config option does not mean you have tried the other methods, the logs show your still using absolute move. You need to send the INCREASE and DECREASE commands and not a dimmer percentage. See the bindings documentation.

As mentioned there are 4 different ways with onvif to move a camera and it is common for cameras to not support then all. It is important to know which one of the 4 your working program is using so you can use the same one in openHAB to compare against.

Ok thanks Matt … making some progress but things seem flaky … will try to narrow it down. I can do a continuous move (Pan left or right). I issued

    events.sendCommand("onvifcamera100057_Pan","INCREASE")
    sleep(5)
    events.sendCommand("onvifcamera100057_Pan","OFF")
    return

here’s the log:

Is that the right way to issue the “REFRESH”?

Here’s the log when setting a GoToPreset …

2022-07-13 11:15:31.071 [WARN ] [amera.internal.onvif.OnvifConnection] - Camera did not report any ONVIF preset locations, updating preset tokens now.

Does this mean the camera doesn’t support ONVIF presets? I use presets from the UI and they work fine.

Some more information about this … as shown above, when I run that command I get a 401 Unauthorized … which seemed weird since it works from the browser … so I tried a curl like this:

curl -i --output junk.jpg --digest --verbose "http://10.0.0.57:38257/snapshot.cgi?user=admin&pwd=*****" -H "Connection: close" --no-keepalive

And as expected, it returns the image no problem.

Why would it not work using the -u user:pass ?

Just to boil this all down … the main goal for me using the IPcamera binding is to be able to fetch a snapshot on some event (using jython) and forward it to my Telegram channel … icing on the cake would be to be able to reposition the camera using PTZ on certain events.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I appears that the camera has no presets stored otherwise a list of the presets would be in the reply and the binding would not fail with that error.

  1. The error should be considered a bug and reported on GitHub. It should be handled gracefully and logged.

  2. I can’t tell what you mean it works in the UI? Do you mean openhab, an app made by the brand or a ONVIF 3rd party program?

  3. A 401 error is normal for a device that uses DIGEST security. It should then resend and work after the 401. A verbose output gives you the full detailed breakdown of what is happening.

Thank you Matt.

Sorry, I meant that from the cameras provided UI, I can set and use presets … I can also do it by issuing a HTTP request to the camera … but obviously that doesn’t mean the camera supports presets from ONVIF. I have not yet been able to verify presets with an external ONVIF app…

Yes I can see that it retries a second time after the first 401 … but it fails with a 401 the second time as well. (see log above from previous post)

Regarding:

I’ll try to get more specific data on the preset issue before logging a bug.

And regarding getting a snapshot image (my main goal now) … I can fetch a snapshot from the camera from a browser with:

http://10.0.0.57:38257/snapshot.cgi?user=admin&pwd=mypassword

So I tried putting that in the Things “Snapshot URL” (instead of leaving it blank) … that doesn’t seem to make any difference. :frowning:

Then I wont comment further as it would only waste my time if the camera does not support the feature.

It is reporting that your password is wrong in HTML format. I can only guess that this is the reason why it does not work. Since it is not working from CURL, I suggest you contact the camera support and ask them why, and how to fix.

Thanks Matt … yes agreed. I’m moving on from the binding and writing camera specific functions for PTZ and image grabbing … this camera brand is notoriously flaky as is their customer support.
