I’m totally new to openHAB. I have read over most of the related posts in the forum, but most apply to rPI installs, which i not sure how much they really relate to my setup. I have tried to include everything I have seen asked from the OPs on other posts. To the best of my knowledge the firewall has been completely disabled.

When attempting to access the web UI from the host machine by navigating to localhost:8080, I get a message saying “Unable to connect”.

netstat and lsof both show no signs of anything listening on port 8080.

Forgot to mention that OS X has been completely removed from my Apple Mac Mini. I only single boot Ubuntu.

Since you are running Ubuntu almost everything will apply. You can even use openHABian if you wanted to. Just follow the Manual instructions in the docs.

How did you install?

What is at the top of openhab.log? There might be an error that occurred during startup that might be enlightening.

I followed the instructions from here:
https://docs.openhab.org/installation/linux.html

I used the apt and systemd instructions.

The openhab log I posted is the full contents of the log file. I opened it in nano just to be sure, there was nothing but that same line over and over.

Was there an openhab.log.1 or .2 etc? That is not the top of the log file.

Do this. Run tail -f /var/log/openhab2/openhab2.log and in another terminal run sudo systemctl restart openhab2 and watch the logs go by. Somewhere near the top there will likely be some sort of problem.

the log file is only named openhab.log, so i modified the command to tail -f /var/log/openhab2/openhab.log

I think I need to just trash this install and start over. I tried tailing the log file, but it never changes. in the separate terminal tab i even tried stop and start, nothing i did generated anything new being written to the log.

Would you recommend openhabian or a basic openhab install again?

I’d recommend openhabian.

Thank you for your help Rick. I’ll try openhabian.
