Hi,
just recently approached KNX and would like to implement for my smarthome. Like everything, it’s always a challenge when approaching something new.
I want to to use the VIMAR LINEA series in the home and started looking into some of the KNE supported hardware from VIMAR. Something like the VIMAR 640mA power supply is around 400 euros whereas the GIRA 640mA PSU is basically half the price.
It this just a marketing thing or is VIMAR really worth the additional cost? More importantly, how does OpenHab interoperate with KNX? Does the binding communicate with the IP gateway, which then in turn cascades downwards the commands to the KNX devices or does Openhab communicated directly with devices downstream of the KNX gateway?
In the first case, I guess the critical issue becomes the selection of the KNX gateway whereas in the second instance, every KNX device has to be well supported by OpenHab.
ANyone have some good experience with integrating KNX with OpenHab?
KNX Devices are all certified. So for general devices, like power supplies, it should not make any difference which one you take. I prefer the MDT Line. They are cheap and do their job.
Yes, that’s how the binding works. You only define the group addresses and types items and the binding does all the communication with the KNX side.
There are a lot of members in this forum who actually use the KNX binding with openHAB. I designed, implemented and setup my system round about 10 years ago and it is still working with openHAB in a very good way.
There are differences, e.g. my PSU is actively participating on the bus, has a graphical interface, is providing figures like power, voltage, etc. and can power more than one line,…,…
Luxury edition I’d say.
But if you are looking for a basic PSU any certified one should do - had one from MDT for 10 years working fine. (now serves as backup unit).
VIMAR doesn’t seem to be on the cheap side, but that’s something you have to decide - I mainly run MDT components and had no serious issues yet.
Good thing is you can mix components From different vendors, the certification ensures interoperability.
Wouldn’t go for a Chinese one with fake CE label, but I guess you are aware of the risk.
