Which Good Home Air Purifier Should I Buy?

I researched the best home air purifier lately and wanted to ask for some recommendations from people who have actually used them at home. I am mainly trying to improve indoor air quality and reduce things like dust, allergies, smoke, pet odors and other airborne particles.

There are so many brands and models available that it’s becoming difficult to decide which one is truly worth buying. I’m looking for something effective, energy efficient quiet, and easy to maintain over time.

For those who already own an air purifier, which model has worked best for you? Have you noticed a real improvement in air quality or allergies after using it? Also, are there any important features or filter types I should pay attention to before purchasing?

Looking forward to hearing your recommendations and experiences. Thanks in advance

Since you are new to openHAB, based on your previous post, and just getting started, I’m not sure an air purifier is a good first integration. The good ones tend to be relatively self contained “set it and forget it” devices with limited opportunities for home automation integrations.

Most of the best consumer grade ones in the market with smart home integrations are significant more expensive than the “dumb” ones and about all you get out of them are alerts when it thinks you need to replace the filters.

For a dumb one I recommend the Coway Airmega 1 or 2. For something smart, I recommend looking at lighting or door locks or something a little more automatable.

we had already a few fake bot users.

What functionalities of an air purifier would you want to control with openHab?

Thanks for the suggestions and feedback.

I completely understand the concern about spam posts and affiliate links. I’m genuinely just researching options before buying my first air purifier and wanted to hear real experiences from people who actually use them.

For me, the main interest with openHAB integration would be things like:

  • Monitoring indoor air quality

  • Automating purifier speed based on air quality sensors

  • Notifications for filter replacement

  • Automatically turning it on during cooking, smoke, or high dust conditions

  • Quiet mode automation during sleep hours

I agree that a purifier is probably more set and forget, but I still thought it could be interesting as part of a broader smart home setup. Also appreciate the Coway recommendation, I’ll definitely look into the Airmega models.

What’s your intended setup?

Platform for openhab and protocols to use?

Thanks again for your help. I understand the concern regarding spam accounts.

I’m a genuine user and recently started exploring openHAB and smart home devices. My question about air purifiers was mainly because I was considering adding indoor air quality monitoring to my setup and wanted to learn from other users’ experiences.

Regarding openHAB integration, I was curious whether anyone uses air quality sensors together with an air purifier to automatically adjust fan speed, send filter replacement notifications, or create automations based on PM2.5, VOC, or other air quality measurements.

I appreciate any advice from members who have experience with this type of setup.

Once again @zoo what’s you setup?

Platform for openhab and protocols to use?

Thanks for following up.

My current plan is to run openHAB on a Raspberry Pi 5 using MQTT as the primary messaging protocol. Most of my devices will be connected through Zigbee (via Zigbee2MQTT), with Wi-Fi devices where native or community bindings are available.

For the air purifier, I’m mainly looking for a model that exposes useful data such as PM2.5, filter status, fan speed, and power state, and ideally allows fan speed or mode to be controlled from openHAB. My goal is to automate it based on readings from separate air quality sensors rather than relying only on the purifier’s built-in automation.

At the moment I’m still comparing different options, so I’d really appreciate hearing what hardware others are using successfully with openHAB. If anyone has a setup they would recommend, I’d love to learn from your experience.
