Z-Wave Fibaro RGBW lamp not dimmable to full brightness

I am debugging a problem with the Fibaro RGBWE27ZW RGBW bulb. It cannot be set to full brightness, except when it gets a ‘cold’ start. As soon as I change any of the settings (color temperature / color / brightness) it moves to a maximum of 50% brightness.

The device is MULTILEVEL_SWITCH / POWER_SWITCH_MULTILEVEL.

What steps can I take to debug this problem? Can I override the values sent to the device? (because I think the 0-100 range should actually be 0-255 for this particular device).

@chris Thanks so much for making the Openhab 2 binding! Adding new devices is a breeze and the DB seems really well thought out! Interesting job in aerospace.

No - this isn’t possible.

Well, there’s two command classes used in these devices.- the multilevel switch which uses 0 to 99%, and the color switch which uses 0 to 255. The binding should treat this correctly in this way - I’d be very surprised if this device did something different as it would be non-compliant to the zwave command standard.

I have one of these devices (I think - somewhere!) so I’ll take a look tomorrow.

Well, I just fiddled around with the settings a bit more. Something peculiar: I can recreate the ‘full brightness’ when doing the following steps:

  1. Turn the bulb on
  2. Put RGB parameters to (0, 0, 0) (hue, brightness, saturation)
  3. Turn bulb off
  4. Turn bulb on again

When any of the parameters are changed, the bulb falls back to max 39.2% brightness (100/255).

Please provide a debug log and I’ll take a look - it’s hard to comment without really seeing what’s happening.

Debugging of org.openhab.binding.zwave at DEBUG level (maybe I need more?

Here I perform the steps twice:

  1. All color parameters to zero
  2. Turn bulb off
  3. Turn bulb on (full brightness!)
  4. Change one of the parameters (no full brightness…)

The log shows what roughly appears ok I think. We can see the dimmer setting between 0 and 99, and the color commands between 0 and 255.

There’s something strange in that there’s no data being received back from the device - is it actually working or is it a logging problem?

There may be some interaction between the two classes that might be confusing things - it’s late here so I’ll take a look tomorrow if I can find my bulb ;).

I’m so sorry, it is actually mixed up Fibaro and Zipato. It is the Zipato RGBW Bulb.

Ok - but I don’t expect them to work any differently if they are using the same command classes. As per my comments above, the binding appears to be sending the correct commands from what I can tell 0-99% for dimmer, and 0-255 for the colors.

I don’t see any responses from the device in the log though so either it’s not working properly, or the log is incomplete (and I’m guessing you probably haven’t provided the full log?).

I shouldn’t have grepped the logs on zwave! The lognames are abbreviated and truncated, so it didn’t match all lines. In the link is the full log of around 3 seconds of fiddling with the colors, while I reproduced the bug. Of particular note: there are some NPEs! Could it be due to this lamp having 5 color channels? (RGB, Warm white and cold white)?

Thanks - I’ll take a look at this this evening (and also have a play with whatever bulb I have). When you said this was not an Aeon, but a Zipato - does that mean you have both and one works ok and the other not, or did you just forget which one you had? (just trying to work out where the issue might be).

The binding is currently configured to always set the 5 channels - this has always worked fine for all the devices I’ve tested it with - it shouldn’t NPE, but I’ll take a look at that first.

Just to be clear - what version of OH2 are you using? Is it a recent snapshot, or B4, or something else?

Cheers
Chris

I only have the Zipato Bulb, didn’t try any other Z-Wave devices yet (except the USB controller).

The version I am running is b4. Just before, I tried the latest build, but it cannot load since it depends on a method which is only available in 2.0.0 (java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.eclipse.smarthome.core.thing.Bridge.getHandler()Lorg/eclipse/smarthome/core/thing/binding/BridgeHandler;)

Perhaps I should try the upgrade to the nightly, because I see you made various fixes to this specific class. I cannot match up the line 182 on which it NPEs.

Yes - it would be good if you can upgrade to the snapshot as it will be difficult to debug otherwise, and if there’s a change needed, then you will definitely have to upgrade to the snapshot.

So, it turns out my bulb is also the Zipato (there’s no markings on the damn thing at all!). Mine seems to work ok - I’m reasonably sure that the brightness is correct at least. There’s some slight ‘strangeness’ when using the brightness control that’s part of the HSB control versus the dimmer, but otherwise it appears ok.

So, I think it would be good for you to make sure you’re running the latest binding - if you’re still having problems, then at least we’re in the position where we know we’re not fighting against out of date code.

I installed latest (as of yesterday nightly 631?) openhab 2 online distribution.
installed z-wave binding and loaded all the devices.
I found my zipato bulb and made it into a thing.
Or, it is made into 3 things with subsequent information below the things.
I can control on/off as well as color using color wheel.
Dimming also works.
But I cannot make it into “white” nor warm white. So I’m stuck in different colors.
And as OP stated problem, it does not light up 100% as well.

Can you provide an image of what you see - I’m not sure why you would get 3 things being created for a single device.

Also, why don’t you think that it lights to 100%. Mine appears to work fine as best as I can tell - and the bulb does say it is at 100%. Have you found a way to make it brighter?

My bad.
There is only 1 thing and 3 channels.
Dimmer, Color Control and Color Temperature.

Funny thing is, now I get its online then after around 15 seconds I get “offline - communication error”.
I created a new openhab2 and excluded/reincluded the led bulb.
Now it shows online whole time.
It started with 100# cold white now.
But as soon as I change saturation, it changes into color instead.
And if I choose saturation 0% it is actually only lightning up only 30% cold white.
The color temperature actually does nothing.
And “brightness” under “color” does only “on/off” and not percentage of 0-100.

edit: i thought you put this into console to enable debug? I also run openhab with debug cmd.

How do you know it’s 30%.

Agreed - this isn’t working at the moment on this device.

Agreed - this needs more thought. In ZWave, the color command class is not meant to be used to adjust brightness. So, when you adjust brightness using a color control, it is ignored. The binding ought to change this to use the dimmer, but at the moment, it doesn’t. We have an open issue on this, but it’s not top of the priorities since you can easily change the brightness.

I’m not really sure why you’ve attached an event log - what is this trying to show?

What makes you think this? Mine appears to work fine - why do you think yours isn’t at 100%? What does the log show? This is the real issue here, and I’m still not convinced that it’s actually an issue - at least based on my own tests - maybe your bulb is different though so I’m trying to understand why you think it’s not working.

Its an observation that it lights up around only 30%.
I have other regular dimmers and they look like this when they are around 30-40%.
I can not look directly at the light when it starts up at first “from scratch”. But after first edit/color or whatever the leds are barely illuminating the surrounding area.
It is more like a damp red district cupboard light
I attached the logs in case you needed it. I’ve read too many posts ending with “please post logs”

It’s a great bindning. Thank you for the hard work!

But this is a low power LED light - it’s not a regular dimmer so you can’t compare like this. A 200W bulb will be brighter than a 100W bulb - the dimmer is not relevant I think. I have many lamps brighter than this bulb, but does that mean that this bulb is not at 100% - I don’t think so.

Maybe you can describe exactly what you’re doing and I can try and replicate it. By this, I mean are you setting a color, or adjusting the dimmer, or what.

Well, at least you can find a use for it (or maybe not  ).

I’ll take another look with mine, but I’m reasonably confident that the binding is setting it to 100%, and if the bulb says it’s at 100%, then I don’t think I can set it to 300% to go from 30% to 100%…

Thanks - logs are my friend :).

Ummm - no attachment… You can email it to me if you like (chris -at- cd-jackson.com).
