Zooz ZSE41 Open/Close Z-Wave Sensor - No Contact Channel

Aren’t door sensors normally contacts?

I’ve been updating my old CR123 powered door sensors with new 700 series CR2032 powered sensors from Zooz. These new sensors are much smaller and much nicer looking. The ZSE43 tilt sensors work well and they have a contact channel as one would expect for a door sensor. These ZSE41s paired nicely but the door sensor is a switch. Shouldn’t it be a contact?

Thank you in advance!

I think if you add a door_sensor channel to the Alarm CC in the Zwave DB you will get a contact channel. See the ZSE43 entry for example.

In general, a binary sensor would be represented as a Contact type.
But zwave binding has a long, long history of representing them as Switch type.
So “historic reasons”, and now it is not readily changed without breaking existing users.
In the end, it matters little.

Thank you. I just requested access to edit the database.

Would adding a new channel and not removing the old channel, make the change without breaking it for other people? These are fairly new sensors so having it done “right” would seem to make sense.

I use a group to determine if any of my doors are open so wouldn’t having a mixture of switches and contacts break or complicate things?

Group:Contact:OR(OPEN, CLOSED) gDoor "The doors are [%s]" <door>

As a relative newcomer I don’t have all the history but when new device with the sensor binary command class is added to the DB (via an XML upload) a sensor binary channel is automatically added. Since this occurs with all devices (motion, water, door, etc.) it is added as an ONOFF type. This solves more problems than it creates (IMO).

Adding the door_sensor channel to the Alarm CC should result in an OPENCLOSE channel type. It has worked for me in the past.

Another DB feature is that only the Admin can delete, so removing the old (auto created) channel is not going to happen.

FYI- Another “auto create” is the battery channel (if the Battery CC is in the XML), although this happens as the DB is updated (not shown as an endpoint on the endpoint tab)

Thank you for the tips. I greatly appreciate it. I have added the endpoint in the database and requested review. Assuming it gets approved, I’m assuming I will need to wait until the next milestone build before the changes become available to me. Once that happens I’ll need to update openHAB, remove the thing and then add back the thing. Right?

Basically yes. Delete thing, not exclude, then inbox zwave scan to pick up the new channel (if it doesn’t pop up when you upgrade OH). Timing is uncertain (at least to me as simple user) with code freeze coming up and the OH 3.4 release. Hopefully one more DB upgrade will make it into the release (and that will include your addition)

Thank you for the help. I did an update, removed thing, scanned z-wave and added thing back. The new contact channel was there and it works exactly like all my other doors on my network.
