I’ve set up several ECMAScript scripts within openHAB that were working well for many days. At some point they suddenly stopped working, only throwing exceptions. I can’t tell a specific event that led to this issue. It might have happend when I once restarted my Raspberry Pi in relation to the installation of deconz, but I don’t really know. It doesn’t look like it has anything to do with the script itself, but the script runtime instead.
I’ve already searched the community and Google and tried several restarts, but wasn’t able to fix the issue with my limited openHAB skills.
I’ve found two posts that talk about error messages I also had, but they didn’t help:
openHAB 3.1 Release discussion - #81 by davi1td and openHAB 3.1 Release discussion - #82 by davi1td - I do not really know which version I should try to install and how it’s done. I only know the way installing an alternative java version via openhabian-config or I can install versions via apt-get, but don’t know which one or how to say openHAB it should use the alternative version.

When I’m changing the code to var x = 1;, the same error is thrown.

Which ECMAScript engine? There is the default ECMAScript 5.1 which comes with openHAB and there is the GraalVM JavaScript add-on you can install separately. The two are not the same and rules written in one are not compatible with the other. When you do install the GraalVM add-on, for some reason it breaks the built in JavaScript right now (I’ve opened an issue but it’s not gained traction yet) so if you do install the add-on, you must only use that for your rules.
It’s clear from the error that it’s coming from GraalVM JavaScript.
Thank you @rlkoshak, you’re totally asking the right question. I have installed the JSScripting add-on and was not aware it replaces the default ECMAScript engine. I guess I installed it one day just out of curiosity to try it out in the future and did not read the docs first.
After uninstalling the JSScripting add-on, basic scripts work again without exception. In more complex scripts errors are thrown. For example this import var ScriptExecution = Java.type("org.openhab.core.model.script.actions.ScriptExecution"); does not work, throwing a java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.openhab.core.model.script.actions.ScriptExecution cannot be found by org.apache.aries.jax.rs.whiteboard_2.0.0 exeption. Or HSBType cannot be used anymore, which worked previously, logging TypeError: HSBType is not a function in <eval>.
When reinstalling JSScripting, all scripts stop working again, throwing the same errors stated in my initial post.
What could I try next to get more complex rules working again? Generally I’d prefer being able to use ES6 JavaScript, but of course being able to run more complex rules currently would be most important to me .
I really don’t know. All I know is that the GraalVM JavaScript breaks the built in Nashorn. I assumed that uninstalling it would make Nashorn work again but perhaps not. The best I can offer is to open a new issue on openhab-core.
Before doing that though make sure to restart openHAB just to make sure this is a permanent problem and not something that can become resolved by a restart.
Uninstalling it should completely remove all trace and it does not modify any files in the system, so I suspect that any residual failures you have are unrelated.
If you do want to get the new engine running, the failure you are seeing may be because you lack the CommonJS directory that it is looking for (the directory can be empty). I plan to change this directory structure entirely, but haven’t found the time to do this yet (I’m moving house…).
I was not at home for the last week, that’s why my testing stuck for the last days. Before I left, I installed the 3.2.0-M1 build, I thought it could maybe fix something by reinstalling parts of the software or installing updates. It did not change any behavior.
Back home I tried your suggestions, now focusing on JSR223. The first thing was to create the directory. This resolved the JSR223 issue previously saying the CommonJS root folder is invalid.
It did not resolve the import issue, now saying e.g. ReferenceError: "HSBType" is not defined when trying to use HSBType. It looks like this happens for all types and variables that should be there by default according to this list: JSR223 Scripting | openHAB

After this I rebooted openHAB to make sure the issue is permanent. The issue remains.
Could it be an issue related to the warning logged directly before the error?
As I understand it the GraalVM JavaScript addon does not follow the “standard” (I put it in quotes because it’s not really a standard, it’s just how the original openHAB langauges worked) JSR223 Scripting approach. In short nothing at that link I think will be relevant to you when using the GraalVM addon JS addon.
My understanding is to avoid conflicts between imported libraries, no types and variables are there by default with GraalVM. You have to import everything or use a library that imports them for you.
Beyond that I’m not going to be of much help. I don’t know how to import them nor do I know how to use jpg0’s library. But the above is based on what I’ve gathered by watching the add-on’s development on github and such. And it might be some time before jpg0 can reply (understandably) and this might at least give you direction on where to look in the mean time.

With some more hours of testing, I got the old engine working again. The last thing I did was uninstalling the JSScripting automation add-on and then restarting openHAB.
Maybe I previously was that deep in it and did not notice that I restarted with the JSScripting add-on enabled only, trying to get the new engine to work and never tried with JSScripting disabled. But I did many restarts with different configurations. I really can’t tell anymore… The reason I tried restarting once again was that even after uninstalling the JSScripting automation add-on, the script errors showed content including the “GraalVM” which in my understanding should have been uninstalled. This fixed the issue for me now and all my old rules are working again.
It seems that the JSScripting does not completely clean up itself after uninstalling, requiring a restart. (This might be of interest to you, @jpg0.)
Since it works now, I’ll stuck to the old engine for now and from time to time try updated versions of the JSScripting add-on. Since it’s in heavy development and the documentation is still very limited it looks like not beeing suitable for beginners yet (which is totally understandable in an open source project, this should not sound lika a complaint .)
Two things that might be interesting to others related to the new GraalVM engine/the JSScripting add-on:
In my tests, I was wrapping all my JavaScript rules/scripts into an anonymous method. Otherwise I was getting exceptions when using let or const, saying the variables are already defined. This is probably due to the work in progress implementation and that (as I understand) there’s another way do define rules without the UI (in the personal/ directory) and I guess this is the more tested/supported way. I like being able to quickly update my scripts via the web UI, thus I’m currently using the UI.
When trying to use the ohj node module, it has to be installed (npm install ohj) to /etc/openhab/automation/lib/javascript/personal (at least when using openHABian). In older documentation/threads often community instead of personal folder is written, which is outdated information for the current version.
This probably has more to do with the fact that the first time the rule runs, it gets instantiated as an Object. From that point onward that Object is reused. All of the variables defined by the rule continue to exist even when the rule is run a second time and so on.
When the rule runs it executes each line of code. So the second time the rule runs when it encounters a var foo = "bar";, it creates a new variable named foo and throws out the old variable named foo.
However, when you use something like let or const, the whole purpose of that is to prevent you from changing those variables later on. So it works just fine the first time the rule runs but fails the second time.
By wrapping your script action in a function like that, what you are doing is forcing the rule to create and use a whole new Object every time the rule runs. Therefore the variables and consts that were defined the last time the rule ran won’t exist any more the second time the rule runs and no problems will occur.
I believe this reuse is generic to the rule engine and will occur no matter the language. It’s also a good thing as it’s what lets us do something like saving a link to a Timer from one run of the rule to the next. Without that we could never inspect, cancel, or reschedule a timer in UI written rules.
But the GraalVM JavaScript add-ons rules are written and work quite differently from the Nashorn JavaScript implementation so the comparison is kind of apples to oranges. One might as well say it’s a bug because Rules DSL or Jython doesn’t do this.
Thanks for this, just upgraded from OpenHabian 2.5 to Openhabian 3.1 and installed JSScripting. Existing next generation rules, some with ECMAScript, stopped working. Uninstalled JSScripting and all back working.

I was another one that installed it after reading the docs, looking for extra functionality, spent some 30 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, and if it weren’t for this thread would have a broken OpenHAB. There must be others having the same experience.
This is all fixed. Nashorn JavaScript and JS Scripting can exist side by side and have been able to do so for quite some time, since an early 3.2 milestone in fact. It’s definitely in all versions of OH 3.2 and later (note the current release is 3.3).
The devs invented a new MIME type to use for JS Scripting so the two ECMAScript implementations are completely independent just like @ssalonen says.
