Gmail/Third Party Apps

openHAB version: 2.5.11

Assuming I got this because Openhab sends emails via gmail; any idea the effects of this and how we will need to fix it?

Thanks

o help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using

An app or device which uses Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to send emails using your Google Account has less secure access to your Gmail. This might be an older device, like a printer or scanner. To continue using your Google Account with this app or device:

  • App - Remove your Google Account from the app or device and sign in again using Sign in with Google
  • Device - Change your device’s settings so you’re using more secure sign-in technology

Has little to do with the openhab version, gmail is actively pushing using MFA. The second factor can help keep your account more secure.

You’ll probably be prompted to setup MFA and then you can generate an app-password to keep sending email via for instance openhab. Be warned that rotating your ‘main’ password will also remove the app-passwords you generated.

I didn’t know that. Learn something new every day.

@milty456, How to configure the Mail Binding to use GMail for sending email from openHAB discusses a bit on how to set up an application password that will allow OH to send email with 2FA turned on.
