Is this amount of errors normal, multiple reboots/repairs before it finally worked for a few mins, why?

  • Platform information:
    • Hardware: _PI2 Ver B
    • OS: _openhabian 1.5
    • openHAB version: 2
  • Issue of the topic: failed install multiple times, had to repair SD card, and reboot before it finally finished. Thoughts on why? Also its still crashing out and wont stay up.

I think you might be having similar issues to what’s discussed in this thread.

That is 1 of the errors I got but does not explain the rest of them? I followed that tread before I posted but then I got it working by simply repairing the SD card and rebooting. My question is really why did the install have so many crashes/errors. Is it a bad SD card? I tried a number of power supplies before I got 1 that was 3W which appears to be the right amount of power for the pi2. The last time I re flashed and used the 3w supply still resulted in all these errors. I guess im hoping for something simple or perhaps that im just victim of using openhabian 1.5 on a pi2 when its directed more at people with Pi3 or pi4 at this point.

It sure feels like the SD card might be a problem, but that’s always hard to say. It certainly doesn’t sound good that you had to repair it.

I’m not aware of any reason that openHABian wouldn’t install on an RPi2, but I’m not an expert. If a new SD card doesn’t solve it, you could alternatively install a Raspbian Buster Lite image to see if that goes cleanly, then install openHABian on top of it.

Yeah thanks for your help. I do have a class 4 card and although it works fine i think its just to slow and that maybe making up part of this issue. Ill switch to a faster card and see how that goes.

Yeah, Class 4 is pretty slow. It’s actually best not to reuse older cards anyway, since they’re likely to fail in a shorter period of time (since they’ve already been used and likely don’t have any wear-leveling built in). Also, Class 10 cards are inexpensive nowadays.

I would suggest picking up a couple of 32GB cards from a reliable brand/retailer. I’ve read that some of the Sandisk cards you can get on Amazon are cheap imitations, even if they’re sold directly by Amazon (the theory is that Amazon doesn’t differentiate between their stocks and 3rd-party stocks when shipping out SD cards).

I pull my SD card and make a full backup in Windows every time I’m about to do something major. And then I put that image on the spare SD so that I have a ready-to-go backup if and when things fail.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks, i’ll get a new card going today. If the install does not fail i guess that’s answers my issue. I really want to know how to this

The guy in that video has a dahua camera with a speaker and when people walk by his camera detechs them and the speaker yells out to them. He’s using openhab to do it all but man i feel like its going to be a year before I get to the point where I have that working. All the setup guides are old and not built for openhabian 1.5 and a fair bit has changed enough to make it confusing and leave me lost on what is still there and what is now ancient history.

Once you get in and have figured out the basics, you’ll start seeing a ton of opportunities. But before that, I want to clarify some terms.

“openHABian” is a self-configuring system built with the RPi in mind (though it works on other Linux systems), but what matters more is the version of “openHAB” you’re running. The openHABian configuration tool will update itself to the latest version every time you go into it, so there’s no need to refer to the openHABian version number. That’s just a starting point.

You’re going to install openHAB 2.4 as part of openHABian, and once your system is running you can use the openHABian config tool to update to the current stable release (2.5.3). After that, you’ll only return to openHABian’s config tool to update the system or for some other specific tasks. And if anyone asks you what version you’re on, you’ll want to say that it’s 2.5.3.

I’m getting a bit ahead, but my advice is to start small and grow into it. I think the people who struggle the most are those who try to immediately implement and combine a variety of devices and services with some ultimate end goal in mind. It’s best to start with a relatively simple device/service so that it’s easy to work out (and learn from) the problems. That way, you’ll eventually be able to see how to reach the end goal without it being a huge struggle.

Personally, I came into openHAB thinking purely about lighting control, which I had previously accomplished with another system. After I got my WiFi switches/plugs and my basic lighting rules in place, I started seeing other opportunities and adding new pieces to the puzzle. What I do with my system now is much more sophisticated than I imagined it would be a year ago.

Addicting like an expensive drug?

I would like to second and stress that statement. Thanks Russ for making this point.

openHAB and Home Automation are COMPLEX and you do not do yourself a favor trying to setup things by simply combining some bits and pieces of information you might have found on the net.
Make sure you understand the components and concepts first.
Yes it’s an annoying step, but you REALLY should start with the basics.
Start by carefully reading the official docs. They were (re)written for beginners. Don’t try short-circuiting by cross-reading the forum or g**gling.
Only ever slowly start experimenting with a minimum configuration to get simple demo stuff working when you’re at least half way through the docs (and no cheating please - you’ll regret that as many did before you). Always make sure you don’t just read but also understand why and how it works.
Yes it’s annoying, but in the long run - and it IS going to be a long one - this approach will save you more time than any whatsoever “clever” compilation of information sources.

In my opinion you just summarized the purpose of this forum. We are here to help you understand and develop your network, not to feed out full solutions.

You need to understand how your network functions well enough to be able to troubleshoot issues. Nobody is going to come to your house to learn your system and troubleshoot it for you.

understood. thx

One last question. Would you guys recommend BK Hobby openhab videos? It seems he does a good job explaining openhab but then recommends you use visual studio to install all your bindings because using paper UI binding disappear if you use it with any other addon install method. I discovered if I delete OPENHAB\openHAB-conf\services\addon.cfg I can get around this. However I can not determine if this was fixed in 2.5.3 release from google search. Anyway

  1. Wonder what you guys think about BKhobby videos?
  2. The binding install issue with paperui?
  3. If I do use paper ui can i also use the samba share \OPENHAB\openHAB-share\openhab2-addons to drop addons i want to install without this also causing issues with addons disappearing?

THANKS

I recommend nothing but the official documentation and expert advice from here.

This is an example of false advice. That tells me to avoid that source.

Unless it uses the REST API, Visual Studio (or Visual Studio Code) cannot install bindings. Binding can either be installed through the Paper UI or manually by placing in the addons folder. Both methods can coexist but manually installed bindings do not appear as installed in the Paper UI.

OK great to hear that about that being false info. I did delete addons.cfg and it seemed to work my bindings installed through paperui stayed Ill try it without doing this and see if I have that problem.

I also used the manual install method through the addons folder and that apparently wont show up in the paperUI so how do i find them?

BK Hobby is a long-time openHAB user who participates in the forums, but I think you need to look at the timestamps on the videos (same as you would look at the timestamps on forum posts) to determine if the information is still relevant.

I don’t think it’s bad to watch videos, same as I don’t think it’s bad to read an openHAB tutorial on a random website. But the most up-to-date and relevant information is going to come from the documentation and the OH community.

@Bruce_Osborne, it’s been awhile since I used a beta binding (since they were incorporated into 2.5), but I’m fairly sure they showed up in PaperUI’s interface since I used inbox discovery.

Let’s not through the word "false"around too much. I haven’t watched the videos, so I need to leave open the possibility that you misinterpreted BK Hobby due to not yet having a solid grasp on openHAB. That happens a lot around here, so I’m not pinning blame on you or him.

I’m unclear on why you deleted addons.cfg. I’m fairly certain OH needs that file to exist.

I think the real question is, why do you want to do both? I would personally recommend to use PaperUI for any official bindings that are available in 2.5.3., and only resort to manual install if you’re using a beta or a test binding. In those cases, you would need to remove the official binding in PaperUI and then just drop the binding file into the addons folder.

I feel like this has somehow gotten way more complicated than it needs to be for you.

THe binding im talking about here is this one: IpCamera: New IP Camera Binding

I was hoping to just use paperui keep things simple but then I ran into the above binding which it what I need to install and it can not be installed via paperui because its not listed. You have to manually install it which i did. I guess as much as you try to make openhab newbie proof which I love its always going to not be completely noob proof.

Also from my understanding unless you comment out addon.cfg its not used. So deleting it should be fine. Ive already proven that but rebooting without the file. However I also read that it would be recreated and it is not showing in the samba share which makes me wonder.

In that case, there’s no official binding. So, I’m guessing that’s why it doesn’t show up in PaperUI. Without looking closely, I assume it has to be configured via text files.

To be honest, this is exactly why I encouraged you to just get your system running and get comfortable before tackling complex stuff. The IP camera is definitely in the realm of complex stuff.

I know it sounds like we’re trying to parent you, but we’re really not. The reason we give this advice is so that people don’t get discouraged and frustrated while trying to learn openHAB, because this system is not easy to learn. (We see a lot of people coming from systems like Samsung SmartThings and wondering why it’s not all drag and drop. You can either have simplicity with limited options or complexity with unlimited options. It’s nearly impossible to have both.)

You’ll also find that longtime users are less inclined to help when they feel that new users have skipped the basics. I don’t mind having conversations like this, because I think it helps new folks like you to adjust to the expectations. It’s worse, in my opinion, when things quickly turn negative due to mutual frustration. In a little over a year, I’ve seen too much of that.

I can’t remember ever needing to touch addons.cfg, so I can’t comment other to say that I don’t think it should have been necessary to delete it.

OpenHAB makes its own addons.config file down in userdata. addons, cfg was for users in openHAB 1.x to delpoy addons, if I recall correctly

They may show up under the Configuration menu. If you need to automatically discover a Thing sometimes you go to the Inbox and select SEARCH FOR THINGS. If needed you will be presented with a menu of bindings.

By default it is all comments anyway. There is likely an error somewhere when it does not exist though.
