RGB downlights available in UK - recommendation

Hi community,

Thinking of replacing my existing lamp in living room and replacing with RGB downlights. Currently my lamp is controlled by Sonoff device (ON/OFF state).
Been looking at the RGB downlights available on UK market and found the following example:


£50 per lamp it isn`t cheap but hopefully this would work well. In terms of control, how easy would be to integrate it with openhab to achieve full control remotely. Additionally I still would like to use standard switch on wall in case my system goes down one day.


My company is developing an RGBcW fully addressable downlight, that can be driven by the DMX binding in openHAB2.

The fixtures we’re developing are in the prototype stage right now, so there isn’t anything I can send that would be worth reading.

I’m just trying to gauge if this type of fixture would be what you had in mind?

The outline concept for this fixture is that they run on a 12v supply, with a single data (core) cable from a LAN connected controller.

In effect your just need a bit of 1.0mm three core between each lamp.
12vdc+, 0v & data

We’re looking at supplying ready made plug and socket cables to place between each fixture.

The use case would be…

You’d install these fixtures into your ceiling at even intervals, then lay your room out with furniture as you wish.

(Initially, it will probably be that we build our device as a standard lamp size, so that installers can choose any GU10 / MR15 style downlight housing)

You can have any light temperature / colour from any fixture and create scenes in openHAB2.

For example, you might have a Relaxing scene where centre lights are dimmed, with lights above / beside chairs slightly brighter.

A cinema scene might blackout all the lights above seats and screen, but provide a dim glow or cross-fade (of any colours) around the edge of the room.

You could equally go full 70’s disco crazy and create some wild chases.

Controlling all this would be done via the openHAB2 environment, so it wouldn’t be too hard to choose a button system to trigger the scenes.

As for alternatives in the UK…

The fixture you’ve found looks nice, but as you say, it’s a little pricey.

Hey all

Things are really starting to take shape with these lamps now.

I’ve placed an order for 80 housing, so in three weeks we’ll have a batch for sale if anyone is interested :slight_smile:

To wet your appetite, here’s a quick demo video.


I’m using Jinx! to control them in this video, but only because I wanted a couple of fancy effects to show what’s possible.

When I get back from holiday, I’ll get them working with openHAB2 and post a new video and the .items & .things files here.

I’m hoping to give them a price tag of £30, with the master unit (PSU and Art-NET or DMX controller) sold separately.

Just wanted to check if you downlights are fire rated type ? I got someone asking about the solution.

Now there’s a question.

But you can get a fire rated par16 housings.

Thanks @MDAR this is an option but would raise the cost.

My colleague is looking for some downlights for his living room. He wants them to be fire rated and at least RGB (RGBW would be even better).
He is very new to home automation, only been experimenting with OH since last week.

Not sure about his diy skills at the moment and if he would be happy to assemble something together (will ask) but I thought I should give him the easiest solution for start - are there any smart RGB downlights worth looking at. Normal fire rated spots starts from £7. He wants to link them with openhab and have full control remotely.

That’s why we started looking into building these lamps in the first place.

If you do find something, I’d be interested to see them.

I did find some DMX RGB lamps on Alibaba, but I wasn’t convinced that they were DMX by the way they were shown wired together.

Ours only use 3 interconnecting lamps. becuase they are actually SPi chips, running from an Art-Net / sACN DMX controller (which openHAB2 can work with)
